“...1976, after only two days illness at the age of 91. She was one of the younger ones of a C.I.M. family of about 8 children all of whom attended the school at Chefoo in the 1890’s. We of the C.S.A. in Toronto made contact with her only in the last two years of her life, and came to know her as a friendly person who, though hard of hearing and almost blind kept a lively interest in her present as well as her past. Though she lived llone she was blessed in having friends -ind relatives who kept in close touch with her, and her courage and cheerfulness made a visit with her a pleasure and a tonic. G.J.H.
DAVID WOOD HANNA:
Was born of C.I.M. missionary parents on Feb.19th ’09 in Yunnan, S.W.China, and died Sept.22nd ’76 in London, Ontario. He attended Toronto Bible College and later served many years with the Children's Aid Society. At Chefoo 1915-25 he was my best friend. We were in the same form and gang (the War Arrows of course!). We shared a garden plot and joined in keeping pets -rabbits,...”

“...MAY ISALEN HARDING:
May Harding who will be well remembered by all who were with her at Chefoo, died in July, 1976. Her indomitable courage and keenness to enter into everything, including sport, were characteristic of her school life, where she completely ignored her severe physical handicap.
Worn out by suffering from an extremely persistent and severe attack of shingles during the last two or three years, we can only be thankful she is now at peace, and taken to be with the Lord she loved and served for so long, her faith undimmed.
Coming later than most to the Girls’ School, she was allowed to count out the years missed earlier in an Orthopaedic Hospital in England, and the form she was with have kept a "Round Robin" regularly circling the globe to-day. Though a model of good behaviour she could be delightfully mischievous , and her cheery nature was known by all.
After leaving Chefoo, she went to teach in the Ruling "Redcroft" school where Kathleen (Davies) Moore and Contie Stark were...”

“...what happened to ARCHIE HUTSON, with whom I started life in Chefoo, and whose name I have never seen in the Mag. Archie left Chefoo School about 1916, he continued his education in England, finally went on to Cambridge, where he graduated in law.
He spent most of his adult life in India, working for the Bombay Co. During the last few years before his retirement he was made a director of the company, with headquarters in London, England.
Archie is now 74, and he and his wife have retired and are living on a farm in -Somerset. They have two sons and several grandchildren.
MRS JOHN('SHEILA')MILLER has had to return to Britain for a few months for health reasons. She writes in Sept./76 - "Here I am at home having been instructed to leave my Chefoo research behind in Malaysia plus my teaching, entertaining, leadership of the ladies' Bible Group and other responsibilities. After leaving school I spent 21 years with the Asiatic Petroleum Co., in China, and left at the end of 1938 to avoid the Sino-Japanese War. Since then I have lived on my farm in Wisconsin, and I expect I shall stay here to the end.. I am still quite active, although it is no use pretending that I do as much as when I was younger. Fortunately, large farm machinery and the use Of share and custom work, has enabled me to continue to raise corn, oats, wheat, barley, hay and also to keep some cattle.

"Horatius at the Window" (A tale of old Chefoo)
It was a sultry day in June. 'Z' was vainly endeavouring to instill into his Upper III pupils the finer points of 'Recitation’. The 32 boys in his class were struggling with the well-known poem 'Horatius'. Their delivery was humdrum, and lacked emphasis and enthusiasm. Besides, the weather was too hot to waste unnecessary energy.
'Out spake the brave Horatius The Captain of the Gate'
(the class recited in monotone)
'To every man upon this earth,
Death cometh soon or late;
And how can man die better Than by facing fearful odds For the ashes of his fathers And the temples of his gods?
'Come, come boys', said the impatient "Z" 'Let's have a little more emphasis in the right places - some more FIRE in your reciting. Let me show you how. 'He was wielding his favourite malacca cane, and was standing with his back to the french windows...."OUT spake the great Horatius'...”

MARGARET BUNTING - 1913-23
126 Lawton Blvd., Toronto, 0nt.M4V 2A4 ’This past March-June my dream of a life time, and very much a Chefoo dream, came true - a visit to Australia and New -Zealand. Of my Chefoo "set" of 7, four were Australian. My 'trip' included travel by 16 aircraft, 6 trains, 7 buses, and uncounted limousines from air ports to motels and vice versa, and accommodation in 26 motels and 7 private homes.
It was no conventional conducted tour, but a 3 month safari on my own - Australia (5.1/2 weeks), New Zealand (2 weeks) and en route to or from these countries, Fiji, Samoa & Tonga (not the trite Tahiti and Bali), Vancouver and the Rockies with rail both ways across this continent.
I realised that my Toronto friends felt I was a complete fool to expect to pick up these 50-year old friendships. They knew not Chefoo. 1^ knew it would be all right. However I too was wrong. It was 10 times as all right as I had expected.
Just try it yourselves one day......
