“...MISS E. M. HARMAN who died suddenly on January 15th was a wonderfully generous friend of the C.S.A. away back in the 1930's. Many Old Chefusians of the Great Britain Branch in those days will remember her with sincere gratitude for the "Chefoo Week-ends" which, at her kind invitation, were held at her girls' school. After all these years my memory is a bit hazy but my photo album has served as a happy reminder of those very enjoyable occasions of which there appear to have been four - in 1933, 1934 and 1935 at the Grove School, Watford and the last in 1937 when Miss Harman had moved to Shoreham on the South Coast. Not only did we have plenty of fun and games - tennis, rounders and also hockey when Chefoo took on ( and I believe conquered I) the World, represented as far as I can remember, by the Watford Crusaders, but we also had times of happy fellowship when we met for family prayers and discussion on things that matter. To lead ,and help us in these we were privileged to have some splendid...”

“...CLARKE KENNETH WIFFEN TAYLOR, described by a member of Canada's Ottawa Press Gallery, as "one of the finest practising Christian gentlemen", was also Canada's (and, as far as this writer knows, North America's) most distinguished Chefusian. "Distinguished" is in this context a carefully chosen word. He was born in Takutang, Kiangsi, China, in 1899, and attended Chefoo from 1907 to 1915. He died after a prolonged illness in 1975. Even as a pre-schooler, my father and others of his generation foretold for Kenneth, with his massive 5-year-old brain, a distinguished future; then they "saw" him as a General Director of the C.I.M. In Chefoo this brilliant brain early marked him out even among a number of rather remarkable contemporaries, which included Henry Luce and Thornton Wilder. Urged by the North American editor of the Chefusian, Kenneth once wrote an article on these contemporaries in the Chefusian of July 1957. You may remember his comment on Thornton Wilder, that he, Thornton, preferred...”

“...Horace between the goal posts. Unconventional of Kenneth but evidently he put first things first for Thornton! Kenneth was understanding, kind and had a delightful, quiet sense of humour. He went through McMaster University in Toronto with equal distinction as at Chefoo; was overseas with the Canadian Army in the first World War; did graduate work in Chicago and the Brookings Institute in Washington; and then returned to McMaster in 1925 on the Faculty of Political Economy for 14 years. During this period he was appointed a Canadian delegate to the Imperial Economic Conference in 1932 and the British Commonwealth Relations Conference in Australia in 1938. By the time war broke out in 19-39 he was head of the Economics Department and Assistant Dean of Arts at McMaster, but a longdistance telephone call from Ottawa the day war was declared took him to Ottawa, and in succession he served as Secretary, Food Administrator, Deputy -^,*1 Chairman and Chairman of the War-Time Prices and Review...”

“...little money, a breakdown seemed to loom. A Chefoo McMaster friend, unknown to this graduate, told Kenneth about this and next week came the most unexpected, and thoughtfully understanding letter complete with the gift of a cheque (which became a loan) and was sufficient to stave off all breakdowns. Since then, Kenneth Taylor, has been that Chefusian's rather distant, but favourite hero. H.M.B. CHEFOO TODAY From Nanae, Japan One of the teachers writes, "Somehow I get more out of my depths theologically with children than adults ...as when one small boy asked 'Is prayer like a telephone call to God?' I began expounding on the ’hot line' to heaven when he cut in, 'Oh, that doesn't bother me. I want to know if all the other guys up there listen in.' MARY WELLER, the...”

“...Hertford, to preach twice the next day on the occasion of The World Leprosy Sunday, the 27th, they were tempted to break their journey in London and so had this happy experience. It was a strange sensation, on arrival, to see quite a number of greyheads amongst the gathered company, forgetting one was also grey-headed! It only required a little mental adjustment to realize he was a full generation ahead of the eldest Chefooite present - he was not quite a "Rip van Winkle" after all, since his Chefoo dates were only 1896 to 1906. Soon the stalwart form of HOWARD JOYCE our President (whom he had known well in the 1940's as a patient in South Croydon, and recently as a fellow resident in Haywards Heath) gave him considerable reassurance, and soon he and his wife were mingling freely and finding numerous old friends and acquaintances. Here are some notes supplied by ELVA NICHOLSON, the editorial secretary, with a few comments. DORIS BRISCOE & JEAN PEARCE (whose father he had passed medically...”

“...showed the slides of her and her husband's visit to Hongkong and New Zealand. MARGARET DICKSON and INA McLACHLAN showed slides of the present Chefoo schools in Japan and the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. DAVID PARRY (my nephew) was open to receive subscriptions and donations.. EDITH (BRUCE) STAINES spoke about the distribution of the magazine, checking up on addresses. ELVA NICHOLSON asked for people to write to the magazine about their experiences. JOSEPH LIVERSIDGE conducted the brief Annual Meeting just before tea while his wife Betty played the piano for the singing of "The Lord's my Shepherd" and "Lord of all power and might"; then HOWARD JOYCE our President led in prayer at the end. The present writer was greatly impressed by the worldwide peregrinations and distribution of old Chefusians, evidenced here by these pictures and by perusal of the Chefoo magazines. He recalled that in the intervening years God had taken him and his former wife to China on the Tibetan border for 8 years, nearly...”

“...viction came to him and his wife separately that this meant that her father should fly to New Zealand immediately. That "fact is often stranger than fiction" is a much quoted proverb, but the almost incredible factual statement of how all the complicated travel and financial arrangements for this were accomplished very quickly and smoothly, once more proved its truth. He left Heathrow on the 11th February and arrived in Auckland in the night of the 12th (N.Z. time). This contribution to the Chefoo magazine, though requested at the Reunion, was written a few days later "Down Under" and further illustrates the world-wide wanderings of Chefooites. Praise the LORD! R. C. (BOB) PARRY Those present at the Reunion included: DORIS BRISCOE, Nan Clelland, AILSA CARR, MARGARET DICKSON, ELSPETH (WILLS) CHRISTOPHER, DORIS EMBERY, STEWART and JEAN (BRUCE) GOODWIN and two children, BERYL (WELCH) GOOD-LAND, JANET GREENING, HOWARD JOYCE, R. MARY (RICHARDSON) RANKIN from New Zealand has been spending a few months in this country. We were glad to see her in Tunbridge Wells one day before Christmas and then again at the Reunion in London in January. Her relatives in Scotland have also claimed some of her time. “...daughter MAYBETH and her husband Ian Roberts are with the Overseas Missionary Fellowship in Thailand. She has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. The Spring 1975 issue of the Leprosy Mission’s quarterly 'In Action' has a news item from Dr. PHYLLIS TAYLOR ('Chefoo' in Ruling 1948-50), reporting that in her department in the Karigiri Hospital, South India they had last year 45% more inpatients than in the previous year, and there is a steady emphasis on helping people to move out of the hospital to make room for new admission. On the same page as this paragraph is a picture of Phyllis with a leprosy patient taken from the Leprosy Mission's latest film, 'Twenty-six in a Thousand', featuring 'Dr. Phyllis' at work in Karigiri. r 20...”

“...(JUDD) GRAY spoke of what her own long personal friendship with Bill and Vera had meant to her. After other speeches, Bill and Vera made suitable replies. And fittingly, David, the Incoming Director, offered the closing prayer. On May 27th in Spring Garden Baptist Church, Toronto, there was a Commissioning Service for DAVID MICHELL, when he took office as Canadian Home Director of the O.M.F. David's wife, Joan, and their 4 children were all present and the two older daughters, ROBYN (who went to Chefoo in Nanae for one year) and HEATHER sang a duet, their voices blending beautifully. Once again VIVIAN GONDER was Chairman. BILL TYLER gave the charge to which DAVID responded. ED FISH was among the O.M.F. “...AT 73. Last October my wife and I took a hurried vacation to California, to see relatives, including our daughter RUTH BILLINGS (Chefoo 1942-50), and family on furlough from the Philippines. Our other daughter, DOROTHY CARRIER (1948-50) and her husband and 2 year old Louie see us every week; they live in Seattle. Last month GORDON ALLEN (1944-50) and his family moved back to the West and now he has a job as Med. Lab. Tech, in Portland. DAVID ALLEN (1940-50) also works as Med. Lab. Tech, in Chelan Wash. Attending classes in Creative Writing and preparing articles for magazines keep me from mental stagnation. Scanning through my father’s diaries (1883-1933), 50 lbs. in weight, may take one year to read and research for a forth-coming biography. DR. My sister HENRIETTA (Chefoo 1933-36) is about to publish the 1st N.T. in the Otomi (Mexican) Indian tongue, a task which has challenged her for many years, as putting an original tongue on to paper is a tedious chore. There we shall join many friends - fellow missionaries in Korea and South America and seminary classmates who have also served overseas. A door is opening to a new period in our lives. “...Victoria, B.C. V8X 3X9. As noted on P.40 of the December 1973 Chefoo magazine, HAROLD GONDER (5085 Lockehaven Dr., Victoria) and MARGARET (THOMSON) BROWN (1147 Quadra St., #713, Victoria) have been most helpful in settling Anne's affairs since she had to move from her own home several years ago. OLIVE JOYCE has also been faithful in visiting Anne regularly, and she has written us of Anne’s latest move. In writing to Olive and Margaret about their going to see Anne perhaps once a month Hal Gonder says, "I hope that visits from good friends like you two will help to brighten Anne's days. I'll depend on you to let me know if you think Anne lacks anything that I may help to provide." In Sulzberger's new book he says Shantung is one of the principal provinces of China's oil production. Maybe they are pumping it out of the G.S. hockey field." DAVID M.
