“...MARJORIE (MOORE) McLEAN (1913-1974) "My first memory of Marjorie was when she was going to school for the first time in the ’Northern Party’, and was taken under the wing of this senior school girl who gave her sweeties, etc. to keep her from feeling homesick. She (Marjorie) never seemed to forget this I ... Marjorie started her ex-Chefoo life in Scotland, hoping to be a nurse, but did not finish her training, and then before too long she came to Toronto. A few years later she married Ron McLean, and their three children are now all grown and married. ... 'I thank my God upon every remembrance of you’ is a verse I can apply to Marjorie. The Lord seemed to ask her to go through a lot of suffering in the last years of her life - from the time when a broken leg revealed she was short of calcium on that side of her body. She had many visits to the Hospital with different troubles and always had a witness for her Lord, Who called her home on June 1, 1974." » WILLIE DRAPER MIJDDITT Willie Mudditt...”

“...Chefoo at the age of 16 he lived with his aunt at ’ al~ thamstow and soon got into Christian work as a Sunday School superintendent and also started a night mist Lon in a poor part of the town with several other likeminded friends at which sometimes between 400 and 500 children and teenagers attended. In all his active life he was engaged in some form of Christian work , nd he and his wife, who so lovingly backed him up, had the joy of knowing that all his three children were committed Christians. In his business career he had positions of great responsibility and all who worked with him were in no doubt about his principles and beliefs. He was a fine Christian gentleman and one upon whose remembrance all who knew him will thank Cod. H.F.J. DOUCLAS PIKE (1908-1974) - left Chefoo in 1924, and after 2 years as an evening student at Melbourne University (while he taught school by day) moved to New South Wales where he went ’bush’ for 12 years, gaining experience on various stations. “...of set-backs and disappointments, achieved some of his highest ambitions. (Parts of the above taken from The Canberra Times, 21/5/74) A TRIBUTE TO MISS E.M.MCCARTHY GIVE ME THE HARD TASK; MY WILL IS READY. DOING THE STERN TASK MY HAND GROWS STEADY. These opening lines of a poem which used to hang in Miss McCarthy’s bedroom in Chefoo, may be the key to her intense and many-sided personality. ... As a teacher she drove herself and her pupils relentlessly but she did it with such verve that some of her enthusiasm had to rub off on even the dullest of us. Possessing an unusually keen mind herself, Miss McCarthy delighted in any student who showed special ability and she spared no effort to give extra coaching and encouragement. On the other hand, to the rest of us she showed unflagging persistence and ingenuity in explaining difficulties, whether in maths, Literature or Bible study. ... "E.M.M." took a leading part in all school activities. It was she who organized exciting expeditions for...”

“...by sound common sense and a sparkling sense of humour. She introduced us not only to Milton, Tennyson and St. Paul but also to W. W. Jacobs and Mrs. Jiniwin. ... Since she left Chefoo, Miss McCarthy has touched the lives of hundreds of people in many different countries; but we, who knew her so well during our formative years, have surely the greatest reasons for remembering her with gratitude. SHEILA (TULL) LAMBERT (Many felt that the -’In Memoriam’ paragraph on Page 3 of the July 1974 issue of the magazine was not adequate, and we are grateful to Sheila for the above - Ed.) 'CALLING ALL CHEFUSIANS EVERYWHERE' SHEILA (MRS. En route we spent one night each in the three OMF hostels at Warlingham, Newbury and Bidbor-ough, and it was good to see where the newest ex-Chefusians live. Although most were .away at boarding school at the time, we did manage to see JOYCE LONGLEY. We visited MISS BROOMHALL, and MISS PHARE in Tunbridge Wells, and MISS BOND in Norwich. “...SYDNEY REUNION September 2, 1974 PETER ROBINSON writes: 'TIIEO HAYMAN kindly arranged with FAITH LEDGARD to have a Chefoo reunion whilst I was on holiday with my family in Sydney. Faith did s splendid job of organizing the Chinese Chow. It was a memorable occasion for me because so many of my Chefoo contemporaries attended. Faith tried unsuccessfully to contact MARGARET OLESEN and NEIL YORKSTON.’ Here is Faith’s own account: "On Monday, 2nd September 1974 12 C.S.A. members and their families and some friends met at the home of FAITH (HUTTON) LEDGARD for a 'Chefoo Chow'. Photos of places in Chefoo or groups of classmates brought many a peal of laughter and tested our memories in matching faces with names. After a delicious meal we gathered around the piano to sing some of the old school songs - ably led by ANDREW HAYMAN who had kindly duplicated some word copies. Cameras had clicked all evening. After an official group photo followed by supper, we sang 'The Lord's my Shepherd’ before leaving...”

“...We would like to extend to EDITH our sympathy on losing both her parents and her husband inside nine months. In June 1973 SAMI SCHWEITZER (who may be reached through his parents at Mullerwis 9, CH-8606, Greifen-see, Switzerland) met a ’Chefoo-in-Shanghai’ classmate, DR. ROBERT ADOLPH from Bangladesh. Robert had been visiting his brother DR. HAROLD in Ethiopia, and from there had come with his family (A children) to Switzerland and stayed with Sami for 10 days. This was their third visit with Sami. They always have a good time together. CHRIS STARK (19 Lingfield Rd., Gravesend, Kent DA12-5AH) writes: "Just around the corner from me lives a retired Chief E.R.A. Royal Navy, who served 2 commissions in China in IIMS ’Magnolia’, a sloop. She#and he visited Chefoo in 1927 when I had occasion to visit the ship, although I did not meet him then. I met him quite by chance 2 years ago. He has since had a leg amputated and is not too mobile. I visit him each week and take him library books and have...”

“...Officer-of-the-Watch ordered us to make fast to the boom amidships. (This is a big spar jutting out from the ship's side with a rope-ladder hanging from the out-board end.) Some of us climbed the rope ladder, and did a balancing act along the boom, and boarded the ship. We had a look round, and I found my way to the galley where the cook gave me a large mug of ship's cocoa. At this Chief E.R.A.'s house I met a Commissioned Engineer Royal Navy, who was also in China in 1927 at Wei-hai-wei and Chefoo in HMS 'Ambrose'. On visiting the latter officer's house I found that his wife was a Nurse who looked after me during the war when I had a leg injury. Quite a chain of co-incidences." 13...”

“... Between them, JOSEPHINE and MARJORIE TULL (now MacBETH) showed Dorothy the special places of interest in Toronto. Dorothy was specially glad to be in Toronto for the C.S.A. June outing, on which occasion there were SIX of her class present, - and the cameras clickedl She was glad to see MARGOT BARRIE again, a friend from Ruling days. The C.S.A. offers belated congratulations to DR. KATHERINE YOUNG, who received the O.B.E. in January 1969 for her work in West Nepal. KATE, as she was known in Chefoo days, is still doing medical missionary work in N.’ India, under somewhat less strenuous conditions than those of West Nepal. Anyone wishing to contact her can do so through her sister MRS. MARIAN WELLER, The West Church Manse, Grangemouth FK3 8EL, Scotland. “...’CHEFOO’ TODAY (Nov. 1974) (A) In the Cameron Highlands of Peninsular Malaysia There were 26 newcomers to the School this past term, making a total of 95 children (55 boys and 40 girls). A little girl asked a new boy where he came from. His answer: "I come from England, America and Canada, and I speak all 3 languages I" Here are some of their opinions (expressed and perhaps unexpressed): "Happiness is - a hot bubble bath - a game of soccer in the mud - to smell fried eggs and then eat them - petting Frisky and getting a lick back - seeing Mom and Dad - a rainy night - a friend. MARGARET LOCKHART is the Staff member responsible for organizing the ’Thailand Party’ of 36 children going home for Christmas. There are innumerable forms to be filled out - and many other details arranged - to say nothing of that array of suitcases etc. to be packed - before the eventful moment, December 8th, 11:30 p.m. when these 36 with 3 or 4 adults escorting them will leave ’Chefoo’ in taxis (inexpensive in...”

“...up as the husband is Swiss and the wife Australian. Are these children growing up bilingual? Not entirely! But the English school do sing German songs with great delight, and once school is out for the day the children tend to socialize in English. (C) In Nanae, Japan Chefoo in Nanae, Japan has had 6 newcomers this past term - making a total of 16 children in the School, 3 of them, DONALD, DOUGLAS and JONATHAN HAYMAN being 2nd generation ’Chefusians’ (the STEPHEN METCALF family are on furlough). The Nanae School grounds -always beautiful - have been transformed lately thanks to 'Uncle Ruedi', a Swiss professional gardener, who, in his travelling around 'to see the world' heard of the need in Japan and came to give his services gratis. The children loved working with him, even when he insisted on them putting the slogan 'Fight Litter Pollution' into practice. One day the boys came into class several shades darker than usual. They'd been helping Uncle Ruedi and his driver friend, Mr. Takeda...”

“...the lovely surroundings of the Morton Arboretum. This gave the three TAYLOR sisters, GRACE(HARRIS) MARION & ISABEL who were spending a long week-end with the CROFTS an opportunity to renew some acquaintances. “...son DAVID to send ite to us - Ed.) Well, it was a milestone, covering a period extending six years back into the previous century and a more exciting time to live I cannot imagine. It has been a varied life, marked, as we look back, on many events that were definitely the Lord’s leading. One of these was our entrance into Chefoo the winter of 1926-27 and the subsequent education of our boys and our relationship to the many good friends of the China Inland Mission. Those were a wonderful .13 years of which happy memories will long remain. We have just received MARTHA PHILIPS’ (Chefoo Staff 1937-1943) annual letter, and we enjoy reading the Chefoo magazine and keeping up with those we and our boys knew. One name, MARY RIRIE (49 Dundonald St., Apt. 36, Toronto, Ont. M4Y 1K3) long antedates our stay there, since she was a nurse in Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital when my wife Florence (Howe) was in training, 1916-1919. We keep fairly well for octogenarians in spite of Florence’s angina and...”
