“...IN MEMORIAM
GRACE (ANDREWS) BABCOCK
Her sister DR. EDITH ANDREWS (Chefoo 1933-1938) wrote: "On Jan. 14, 1973, after a brief illness, GRACE (ANDREWS) BABCOCK (Chefoo prior to 1926) died following cancer surgery. Although grateful that she did not have a lengthy illness, her death came as quick a shock. EGBERT (Chefoo 1916-1927), his wife, and my other sister HENRIETTA, all were home on leave, but had not been able to see GRACE as she became critically ill so rapidly."
MRS. J. 0. FRASER
"Perhaps there is not a very large number of Chefu-sians who remember MRS. FRASER in the classroom at Chefoo, where she taught for a short period before the internment of 1942-1945. But some will recall the little one-roomed house in the Weihsien compound where she lived near the coal dust "main" street that led to the gates closed to us until August 1945 Do you remember scrubbing sheets with her in the Wei hsien laundry?! For those who knew and loved her well, ROXIE FRASER’S death on December 28th, 1972 has...”

“...reasons to go to China herself as a missionary she served many years in the offices of the CIM at Newington Green, as secretary to Mr. J. B. Martin and later the Rev. Norman Pateman, whose duties included helping Chefoo boys and girls, when they first came to Britain, in any way possible. Mr. Pateman writes of how MISS RIDGE herself took the liveliest personal interest in each one of these young Chefusians, an interest which she maintained to the end. She became a member of the Chefoo Schools Association.
MISS G. M. UNWIN (1878-1972)
Those of us who were pupils in the Prep School while MISS UNWIN was on the Staff (1909-1915) have the happiest memories of her as a teacher. (For some of us these have been revived through seeing her ’Transition Work Reports’ book, which is now in the Chefoo 'Archives').. ROBERT LOOSLEY writes of MISS UNWIN as a skilful, understanding nurse, "Once, while I was in an isolation ward with some exotic disease (I was in a coma for more than a week) I was under MISS UNWIN'S...”

“...an eye on those ’two old ladies’- I needed to do so, for they attempted excursions that could have daunted the courage of people half their age. They accepted my colleague and me (candidates for service with the OMF) as younger workers for whom they should have a special concern - thus a friendship developed which was surely of the Lord. ... After that one seven year term of service in Chefoo, MISS UNWIN remained in England for family reasons and taught school in Wantage, probably in the small local school of which her father had been the Headmaster. Later she made a home for her former principal at Chefoo - MISS BLACKMORE (of slipper fame!) and soon after MISS BLACKMORE’s death MISS UNWIN came to Cornford House where she quickly adapted to communal living, always ready alike for menial tasks and taking her turn at the piano. Beneath her quiet demeanour was a keen sense of humour - there was often a twinkle in her eye. (How those of us who were not in Britain loved receiving her letters...”

“...suggested that we divide into two groups in order to make tape recordings of impressions of life in Che-foo.
One group included people from 1901 (MRS. FRANK PARRY) to those who left in about 1920. The other one consisted of those who were in Chefoo at a later date.
We older ones, led by HOWARD JOYCE, had a somewhat hilarious time reminiscencing. He reminded us of the bands of War Arrows and J.R.s (Jolly Rogers). How thrilled we girls were if on our daily walk we came upon these factions hiding in ambush and making war on each other. In fact some of us had been pressed into sewing the emblems on their flags.
The bubonic plague in 1910-1911 was remembered when the Southerners couldn’t return to school and had lessons in the Shanghai Compound. Those left in Chefoo for the holidays had tales to tell of how only the servants had been allowed out on the streets wearing masks. One small girl on passing the "Eau de Cologne Valley" for the first time, and not having heard of the silkworn industry, was...”

So the contributions of GORDON MARTIN and INA LUCIA about boating picnics and MARGARET WELLER’s memories of winter holidays, sledging, "Hoggie-doggies" and the traditional walk to 3rd Beach after Christmas dinner will have been preserved.
DORIS EMBERY then showed us colourful slides of life in Hongkong and of Chefusians she had met on her travels.
As is our custom at our reunions, we sang together the 23rd Psalm and that lovely collect "Lord of all Power and Might who art the Author and Giver of all good things". We all agreed how well the staff had emphasized the truth of the G.S. motto "Fons Sapientiae Verbum Dei" at our Sunday services. How important too they felt it to widen our interests by those Monday evening lectures and concerts.
A very pleasant get-together was concluded by a delicious tea of home-made cakes provided by JEAN PEARCE and GILLIAN...”

VISUAL - Please send us any duplicate (or unwanted) school pictures (photographs) giving date and names if possible. We are planning to make 4 loose-leaf Albums, one each for the 'P.S.', 'G.S.', and 'B.S.', and another for the Post-World-War-II Chefoo's.

JOE DUNLAP and others in New York City have already done some work on this.. We've begun a 'tape' library here (1058 Avenue Road, Toronto), with a recording sent us from England after the January 1973 Reunion. On one side are reminiscences of the 30's by a group of that era. On the 2nd side AGNES CLARKE and MARJORY BROOMHALL record, in lively fashion, much earlier memories, and then MARJORY gives a resume of later 'Chefoo' History up to the present.
