CHEFOO REUNION AT WARLINGHAM, SURREY.
It was dull and wet outside but inside there was an especially warm and happy atmosphere on that day of the Chefoo Reunion, January 23rd, 1971. It was fun to arrive early at the Chinese Restaurant in Whyteleafe,(the journey had been easy)and then to choose a seat from which we could watch everyone as they came in. Some we easily recognised but others demanded a few subtle enquiries before our curiosity could be satisfied. The room gradually filled and the chatter became louder dying down a little as the delicious Chinese dishes were...”

“...Church where Mr. Lea was once Rector. Only their twins, Jill and Michael are still at home; they take their “A” Levels in July. David, the 21 year old serves with the Metropolitan Police in Hornsey and seems to cope with the job very well. Their second son, Simon, 24, was married in December at Racine, Wisconsin. DOROTHY and her husband flew over for the wedding and stayed with MURIEL (DILLEY) CHERNEY in New York for a few days en route for home and experienced once again the strange phenomenon “Chefoo friendship”, which they found a very lasting and real emotion. DOROTHY’S eldest son is working with I.C.I. in Co. Durham.
The Editors are most grateful to CONTIE STARK (13 Wingate Court, Blackberry Lane, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield), who compiled the following :
CONTIE says -
In January each year, I mean to pass on news received from Old Chefusians at Christmas time, but thinking it’s rather early, put letters aside, and then forget till too late. So this year, while fresh in my mind, I’m sending...”

He remembered the move to Chefoo itself, the Prep. School taking over the single storey premises below the G.S. hockey field vacated by the Boys’ School which moved into the large white hotel at the lower end of San Lane until their own new building was completed, and the Prep. School took over, with Miss Blackmore as Principal.
In reminiscing about Boys’ School days he had some surprising nicknames for masters. His contemporaries will know who were “Mike”, “Shinter”, “Judy” and “Giraffe”!
His particular friend of those years was GEORGE (Toby I) BUTLAND.
WALTER left school in 1908 the first year when the “Oxford” exams, were taken (his name was the first on the BS. honours list board).
We were both amused to find that in the C.I.M. party who escorted him to England the 3 Stark girls were on board, also AMY and IRENE WILSON. (I was only 18 months old at the time).

“...She enjoys the fine music (and good sermons) at the Priory there, and teaches in Sunday School. She lives near relatives of Rosie, DOUGLAS SADLER’S wife, and is looking forward to having them on leave from Kuala Lumpur, where they work with O.M.F.
As for me (CONTIE STARK) I am enjoying more leisurely living too, in spite of a few physical limitations which prevent travelling about much. It is lovely having visitors, and I sometimes find time to paint, in between church work and residents’ association commitments.
My flat is within 5 or 6 miles of the link roads connecting the M.l, M.5 and M.6, so any Chefusians travelling across country and wanting a break from motorway driving would be most welcome (easy instructions and a local street map supplied on request!)
Sutton Coldfield Car Rail Station is only a mile or so away and ideal for sleeping the journey to Scotland in comfort, so please make use of me for further respite.

TORONTO CHEFOO REUNION
Back to dear old China! In a sense this is where we are at every Chefoo reunion. The evening of February 22 at China House, began with the delight of hailing old friends, then enjoying a “No. 1 topside chow”, while we reminisced.
ERNEST GRAINGER threw some beautiful English scenes on the screen with members of the GRAINGER, PARRY & JOYCE families in the foreground.
These were followed by Dr. Robert Jervis, professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto, who showed choice pictures of Mainland China, taken about three years...”

“...shrubs; Nanking Road, Hongkong and Shanghai Bank and other familiar landmarks. Could this be China 40 years later9 No rickshaws and few vehicles except buses and telescope trailers. Instead we saw well-kept streets and hardly anyone on them during the day, and, believe it or not, no flies, our lecturer told us, spiders or unpleasant odours. The Jervis family stayed at the Peace Hotel, more comfortably furnished than the more imposing building next door where their escorts were housed. They visited schools where the well trained and cared for children sang for them. They inspected factories with impressive displays of industrial product textiles (where they met a buyer from Eatons in Toronto ) and museums. The Chinese are envious of Toronto and Taiwan exhibits. They were welcomed at fully automated plants, laboratories, radio-active chemical buildings and listened to fifteen minute speeches to the effect that all this was possible through Chairman Mao.
When Dr. & Mrs. Jervis enquired about attending...”

Now that old order has changed giving place to new and the current problem is to boil down the 60 odd into a reasonable space. Apologies to the rest of the world if this is grabbing too many pages. Blame ISABEL TAYLOR. It’s ISABEL’S tremendously successful promotional letters.

Perhaps we’ll have a chance to attend some of those good Toronto Reunions. The Home for Missionaries’ Children is now being run by a young couple from Arizona who applied for the job. John and...”

“...winter to relations in sunny Florida. This included a leisurely bus trip back with stop overs in Virginia and New York, the latter being a Chefoo session with LENA (KAUDERER) SPIELER with visits to her sister MARGARET (KAUDERER) ADAMS, and a run through of the Chefoo Oral History tape at JOE DUNLAP’s of which more elsewhere. Since then house remodelling. Has anyone cleaned up after the demolition of two walls to enlarge a small living room, and survived the chaos? Don’t do it until you retire. Then Chefoo news, and later preparation for a possible trip to Sweden in August. I should like to look up JOY GUINNESS if possible while there. Any other Chefusians in Scandinavia? We visited bird sanctuaries and game parks, achieving a good range in heights, with the children climbing Kilimanjaro (19,000 feet) and all of us surfing on the breakers of the Indian Ocean near Mombasa. Our second son and daughter joined us again at Christmas briefly. The recent military coup in Uganda happened around us, but civilian involvement was minimal and it was ‘work as usual’ throughout.
