IN MEMORIAM
WILLIAM DAVIES THOMAS
Born in 1914, spent a period from 1920 to 1931 at our old schools in Chefoo. He emigrated to Canada and joined the Imperial Bank of Canada at Toronto, and remained on staff except for active service in the war of 1939-1945. He became a bank manager and was attending to some of his duties when stricken with a heart attack, from which he died on January 3, 1968, leaving a wife, Violet, whom he met in England during the war and a son, William, born in 1947. BILL was a popular person, active in church, community and welfare work, and he was often seen at Chinese meals or other Chefoo social activities. He will be missed by all who knew him.

She graduated from Moulton College, a private school in Toronto, and in the middle 1900's she and Mr. Brownlee with their son DANA left for one term in China in the province of Kiangsi.
However it was as the gracious, and it seemed permanent, hostess of the Toronto C. I. M. home from 1917 - 1946, that Chefusians will remember Mrs. Brownlee. A great number of us arrived in Canada during that period. For most of us, and for many Americans and British also passing through, it was our first Chefoo-ish port of call. For the Torontonians it remained a sheet anchor and for these while Mr. Brownlee often kept a firm and fatherly eye on their finances, it was through Mrs. Brownlee that they got their first fascinated glimpse of, and made their first gauche adjustments to this very new world. Then after that introduction came reunions, as...”

REV. PAUL DAVIS
Rev. PAUL DAVIS (no relation to KATHLEEN DAVIS MOORE and PAUL DAVIS in Australia) of the C & M. A. died after a brief illness, but after a year or more of poor health, in Bangkok, Thailand, on Feb 9, 1969. He finished Chefoo in 1935. To his sister, Mrs. MURIEL SJOBLOM, also a Chefusian, and now a missionary with the C. & M. A. in Bangkok, and to his widow and 4 children, the C. S. A. extends their sympathy.

Then on to Mauritius, a very beautiful island where the swimming is superb. Then a 14 day sea passage direct to Melbourne - and here it was so good to see quite a good number of Chefoo people - Mr. Cyril EDWARDS, Wyn EMBERY, Mary MATTHEWS, Huston and Kitty EDGAR and quite a number more. A pity the time wasn't longer but I am hoping to return to Australia after seeing New Zealand. We are now on the way to Port Kembla (near Sidney) and expect to arrive in Auckland about Jan 24th. After a time in New Zealand I am hoping to visit Tasmania and also to see some more of Australia before beginning my journey back via Canada and the States.

Toronto Winter Reunion
The annual Toronto Chefoo reunion brought out the usual 100 or so enthusiastic Chefusians past & present, husbands and wives and guests. For Chefusians present, read the children at Country Acres, the Toronto O. M. F.
Hostel. It has become the custom to invite this current crop of Chefusians to our reunions. For the dinner, it was ample even by the standards of old China hands, and by the same standards, it was good.

Nanae "Chefoo School", Hoddaido, Japan "Birthdays fulfill various needs. Auntie MARY (School nurse, MARY WELLER) celebrated hers on Sept. 2nd, but we had a final fling for her last night just after school opening, with a weiner roast on the grass to help folk over that lonely feeling after parents left. Not only weiners but bread and even birthday cake appealed more to some folk after a roasting over the charcoal. DONALD THOMSON and JOHN NETLAND were so busy fixing a booby trap for Auntie MARY that they missed their cake. (They had ice-cream compensation later). The trap was successful too.' with everyone crowded round the bigger boy's bedroom, Auntie MARY walked in first, and down crashed a box of presents from above. “...trip to two Koala farms.
Unalphabetical but perhaps the logical place for this Chefoo foot note.
A pamphlet published by the Pioneers' Association of South Australia, crossed the far away desk of MARGARET BUNTING, Gifts and Exchanges librarian for the Metropolitan Toronto Public Library. Glancing through it, on p. 9, her eye caught a reference to Paradise of Dissent by Professor DOUGLAS PIKE - our Chefoo DOUGLAS PIKE? If so, as someone has already remarked it's a small world - also with Chefusians scattered all over it, linking the continents. Or are there two Douglas Pike's in Australia? - destroying this beautiful coincidence. Australia please comment.

“...to have visitors. There's more yard than I care about, but at least it's gotten me outdoors to work on the roses. My Chefoo news is mainly that DAVID HARRIS (about ’42) looked me up on a recent trip, and told me about MARY CULPEPPER WALKER who also lives here in Waco, so about a month ago MARY and I got together and reminisce: She was about 5 years ahead of me, but we knew some of the same people. Out of order alphabetically but here's a note about JAMES ORR. A letter to JOHN KAUDERER could be summarized as "messing about, just messing about in boats", but this in the intervals of fishing, (as in Chefoo), shooting, building boats, as well as a house which entailed long negotiations with the Borough Council due to the originality of its construction. Besides these avocations he holds his responsible position with a meat processing company that at its peak period of production accounts among other items for 20, 000 lambs a day.
