“...loved the "Clear Sky Land. " We will not soon forget the beauty of the day, the memories of friendships it renewed, even though we had to return to the workaday world of the city. “...MARY RIRIE, OLIVE ROUSE, LENA SPIELER (nee KAUDERER), MARION and ISABEL TAYLOR, Mrs. Morrison Taylor, BILL TYLER, with son JOHN and daughter, Elizabeth. Mr. and Mrs. David WYCH (MARGERY JOYCE), Mr. and Mrs. ROSS LUGSDIN (MARJORIE LAWSON). NORTH AMERICAN NEWS Put together this time, not in the wee small hours or other fractional segments of time, but in normal daylight hours out in the garden in the rural seclusion of a peaceful holiday in Prince Edward Island, known if at all to little girls in Chefoo, as to others around the world as the home of Anne of Green Gables. The "sea" I am gazing at, is not quite the actual sea, nor is it the Pacific, but it does bear some resemblance, so here goes. There is a nagging fear that some of the items worked at on the 30 hour journey here may not have survived that trip, but if so it will not be the first mistake, so let us hope for the best. (Secy. ) Therefore scrap the alphabet. Ran into MAIDA HARRIS CAMPBELL and her husband at a party given by the principal...”

“...couple of weeks after we left, is in fine physical and mental shape, with the exception of his eyesight, and thoroughly enjoyed BRUCE's reminiscing of long ago days in Chefoo, and the operations Dr. DANSEY had performed there. After visiting Phyllis's relatives, uncles, aunts and cousins whom she had never seen since she left England at the age of two years, our last and very wonderful week was spent with GLADYS WARREN in Canterbury. A highlight of this stay was the last evening when CHRISTOPHER motored from London and took us all out to Hop Kwang, a newly opened branch of an old established Chinese restaurant, where we amused the many guests by all using chopsticks. The next day, with CHRISTOPHER leading the way in his car, we motored back to Heathrow Airport, and hence home, with so many wonderful memories of old Chefoo friendships renewed, and new ones made. Note: CHRISTOPHER has since sold his home and is journeying around the world, first going to Rhodesia, South Africa, then Hongkong...”

“...note and the invitation to come on the Toronto Chefoo outing, which I wish I could have attended, but I plan to do so one of these years when a few dozen other things are not in the way. I have enjoyed a couple of summer lunches with Toronto Chefusians between trains en route from New York to Muskoka, but they were about thirteen years apart, and at a time when many were out of town. When I come, I shall probably bring a tape recorder. Last weekend I spent a day with three elderly relatives who reminisced on to my tape about childhood summers in the 90's in Muskoka. It was most successful and entertaining. I tried to get my father to do the same for his years on Temple Hill, but his memory is not what it was. Oral history is recognized as an important resource in a number of universities, and I know we of Chefoo have something unique that should be saved. You mention MARY NICHOLL's good work in "Chefoo" in Japan. I do indeed remember her in Chefoo as the classmate who topped MARGARET ALTY and...”

“...Some of the "primitive" ways reminded me of Chefoo. Have four grandchildren that keep our interests up". A note from MARGARET (SEAM4N) FEAVER: "We have spent a sabbatical year at the Centre for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D. C. while my husband worked on a book on ancient Greek music. I had some repair surgery of the pericardium (outer lining of the heart) in January 1968, and have been wonderfully healed. While in Washington, we visited the White House where my son John played the viola with the Washington Youth Symphony which performed for Mre.Lyndon Johnson. Our family "orchestra" also gave an informal concert in the home of a Senator in Georgetown. Our son David sang with the All-City Choir in Constitutiona Hall, while Peter, our six-year old conducted the U. S. Navy Band, held in the arms of the leader.' Just a few highlights of our musical fun in Washington's Wonderland.' " Of the FIDDLER family JOHN writes: "Are there still Chefoo emblems suitable for blazers? Haven't seen a...”

“...and get to a Toronto Chefoo meeting. I know I would enjoy it, in spite of a wretched memory, which will probably embarrass me. " In a letter from MARY RUTH HOWES: "My 1967 vacation was spent in England, 18 days or so with my sister and her husband, FLORA NELL and Philip DUKE, and brand new niece Elizabeth. Since I had such a short time and was there mainly to help my sister, I did not do much visiting away from Abingdon. JOYCE KERRY, my year at Chefoo came one Saturday from Birmingham, and we spent the afternoon at Blenheim Palace. She was the only Chefusian I saw. RUTH YOUNG who taught in "Chefoo", India, at the end of the war was visiting in Grand Rapids last month on her way from Tennessee to Toronto and eventually to the west coast and the Philippines with the O. M. F. Her cousin, PEARL YOUNG, was my Upper 1 teacher in Chefoo. My parents in Tucson, Arizona, recently had a surprise visit from Dr. STANLEY NORDMO, who had learned of their whereabouts through the Chefoo Magazine. They were...”

Thereafter I had two years of high school at Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, Virginia, followed by two years at McKinley Tech High School, Washington, D. C. From 1947 to 1951 I attended...”

“...the way in which dear "Fishie" introduced us to French in the long ago, and find that I can still sing "A Toi la gloire" and "Reste avec nous" and "Debout, sainte cohorte.' " as we used to sing them at evening prayers when she was on duty. My students sang the first in chapel at Easter time this past spring. It gave me quite a thrill to hear. French under Miss HARMON was also a stimulating experience for me; in fact, I learned very little that was new in my college courses after six years of Chefoo French! All the best to the C. S. A. -Long may it wave". MURIEL HUNTLEY MAGNESS carries on the missionary tradition: "Glad to receive another issue of the magazine. Although I see very few names therein which I recognize - I being such an old-timer, still I am interested in reading about all the fine accomplishments of the alumnae of my old school. You may like to hear that I had a wonderful trip to the Orient in May and June. I have a young Chinese protege in Taipei, whom I have been helping...”

“...current or more up to date copy to catch up on news of various people? (Yes to most of that, Secy. ). We bought an old 1822 Connecticut farm house late in 1955, when I last wrote I believe, with some land and a brook, and have been here ever since. We have three children, Christopher 11, Hilary 9, Jeremy 5, and a rabbit. I still illustrate for a living, mostly magazines and textbooks. Went back to England during August and contacted ARTHUR KERRIDGE who lives in Woking. " MARY NICOLL reports on Chefoo in Japan and in the Philippines: "Our garden has been a picture these past weeks with apple trees out in full bloom, and daffodils, tulips, and narcissi in turn in the rock garden in front of the school. I've been trying to enjoy spring in double measure this year, since I won't be having one this time next year. Margaret Knight returns from furlough in August and will be teaching here with Margaret Dickson, and I have been asked to return to the Philippines for a year before furlough, as the...”

“...14. A Chefoo extract from a mission circular letter of BILL TYLER's: "On the 31st, Vera and I attended the ALLEN-FOUCAR Wedding. It was good to see the whole E. J. DAVIS family together. All four daughters were there; MARIE from Toronto, MURIEL from the West Indies, JANET from the Philippines, and ELAINE from North Thailand. It was the first time in ten years that the four girls were home simultaneously. Rev. Walter Steven, brother-in-law of MARIAN DAVIS officiated. ARTHUR and DOROTHEA return to Ben Lippen, North Carolina after the wedding. " RUTH WHITTLESEY SPENCER gives a change of address.
