“...valuable service in the Boys’ School, retired from China. They were succeeded by Mr. and Mrs. L. C. White-law. Mr. Coulthard, after sixteen years as secretary, including a furlough for which Mr. R. B. Whittlesey relieved him, passed his post on to Mr. H. E. V. Andrews and left in May. Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Rowe, retiring from the Sanatorium, were followed by Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Ford.
The joy of Foundation Day this year was increased by the gift of a large new bathing raft from the Chefoo Schools Association. It was well timed, for a storm on July 13th washed both rafts adrift, and the old one. was never recovered.
Adding variety to the routine came a strike on October 6th by the servants of the Boys’ School. Masters and boys, however, rose to the occasion and carried on for several days till the trouble was successfully negotiated.
Another event which might have had far more, serious consequences was the report on November 6th that General Wu Peifu’s retreating troops (said to be 20,000 in number)...”
