C.S.A. Magazine No. 37
CHEFOO SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION
Editorial
WITH this number—the second since the end of hostilities— the Great Britain Branch news-letter becomes once again (after a lapse of fifteen years) the official organ of the C.S.A. as a whole. Its dress and set-out also become a trifle less austere, though we hope for still further improvements in future issues. This, of course, depends on you. We want articles, photographs, designs and drawings—for example, we could do with new heading and cover designs—and any ideas and suggestions you care to send us. With Chefusians scattered all over the world, in peace as in war, we certainly should not lack material to make this magazine more interesting, informative and worth-while than ever. It’s up to you !—isn’t there some job or experience you could tell the rest of us about, or some talent you could bring into service ? Haven’t you perhaps- something
already prepared...”

“...functions of the Association.
Finance and General Purposes :
Messrs. W. D. Mudditt, J. S. Green and H. F. Joyce.
Magazine :
The Rev. J. G. Weller, Miss Mary Weller, Miss P. Bruce and Dr. J. R. Sinton.
Great Britain Branch Activities :
The Misses D. Briscoe, M. Bird, E. Preedy, and D. Rouse.
This division of duties is intended to promote efficiency in dealing with the special matters for which each Sub-Committee has been formed and to avoid too heavy a burden falling on any one member.
The Magazine. For various reasons, some years ago, the publication of the “ Chefoo Magazine ” as the organ of the whole Association was suspended, and each Branch was given the power to publish its own periodical. The Great Britain Branch, therefore, produced its own “ Newsletter”, and this was supplied to other Branches at their request.
The General Committee have now decided to revert to the original plan, and this magazine will now be published as the official organ of the whole Association. Jack and Mary...”

“...Attendance broke all records, and the allotted time sped past as old friendships were renewed. Howard Joyce fought a losing battle against the desire of all present to cram six years into six hours. The buzz of conversation was hushed only for Mr. Welch’s account of Liberation Day at Weihsien and Mr. Martin’s tale from Chinese folk-lore of how the islands in Chefoo bay came to be. This latter recalled vividly to my mind concerts and literary evenings in the “ Mem. Hall The business of the Association was got through successfully, and all stood in remembrance of those who had died in the service of their Country and in memory of Mrs. McCarthy.
The usual games were played, and here some criticism was heard. It is difficult to please everyone, so will those who have ideas for future reunions write to one of the C.S.A. Committee.
The evening ended with prayers taken by Dr. Judd. The company gradually dispersed still talking over the good old Chefoo days. Patsy Bruce.
Amongst those present at...”

“...of younger and more innocent Chefusians, to “ explain ” the seal and dolphin which combine to form the C.S.A. crest. The crest was adopted, you may
remember, in 1935 ; and its designer was Theo. Hirst.
In the “ News-letter ” for December, 1935, the following interpretation was given : “ The emblem may be described as a Chinese dolphin—referring to Chefoo’s position by the sea—with a Chinese seal, the special characters on which are intended to convey the meaning of * Chefoo —Old Scholars’ Association ’ ”.
And now, you’re as wise as we arc !
On the “ Double Seventh ” (7th July, 1937)Japan attacked China : in December the invasion, sweeping south, reached Chefoo. The Chinese forces had retreated to avoid being cornered in the Shantung promontory, so there was no fighting in Chefoo. Anxious years followed, with fighting spreading into Central China, with barricades round the Tientsin Concessions, and anti-British demonstrations

“...Michigan and Ft. Snelling and received a commission with the rank of ' Lieutenant. ERIC CEDERVALL hopes to go to the Orient as an enlisted man— and to Tokyo, too !
NORMAN SIBLEY writes :
“ Curiously, I have run into two Chefu-sians lately—one recent and one an old-timer. The recent attendant at Chefoo is EARLE WOODBERRY, now a student at New York University. Our church is on< the edge of the campus, and he turned up as a member of a Bible study class I conducted through the campus Christian Association. The old-timer is DR. W. T. REID, now with the Ohio Messianic Testimony—an organization working to convert Jews. He called on me as a New York City minister, and I found he was at Chefoo until 1896 or so. His address is 655, Forest Avenue, Avondale, Cincinnati 29, Ohio.”
Many Chefusians will be sorry to hear of the death of Dr. William Malcolm, who died in New York on February 19th, 1946, at the age of 85 years. As Port Doctor of Chefoo from 1917 to 1938, he was a familiar figure to many Chefusians...”
