“...Newsletter No. 34 DECEMBER, 1944. •-J Chefoo Schools Great Britain Association X Branch. Editorial. This news-letter bears the date December, 1944 ; but we fear that through a combination of circumstances, it is unlikely to appear until well after Christmas. However, we may still exchange greetings in retrospect—and bid one another God-speed for the coming year. Please God it may be the year of the beginning of peace. We are grateful to all who have contributed articles or news items to this number. One major regret is that we have so little to report about the Schools at Weihsien ; but we continue to pray that there may be blessing in adversity and an undaunted faith, till the hour of liberation. A Winter Reunion is planned for Saturday, January 6th, 1945 : of which separate notices are going out, as this news-letter will scarcely be in time to announce it. It is to be held (as usual) at the China Inland Mission, Newington Green, from 3 p.m., with Howard Joyce presiding. We hope...”

“...to speak here of the wider service which Mr. Martin has rendered to the Mission and to the whole Christian cause ; but we welcome this opportunity of putting on record the lively and grateful affection which (one may safely say) hundreds of Chefusians feel for him and for Mrs. Martin. What his warm friendship and wise counsel have meant, to generations of Chefoo boys and girls who have arrived in Great Britain to continue study or to begin a career in strange surroundings, is beyond all reckoning. No one could be present with Mr. and Mrs. Martin at a Chefoo Reunion without noticing how deep and unaffected was their love for the Schools (and all connected with them) ; or how deeply they were themselves beloved. And now, at Pembury in Kent, they are enjoying the leisure they have so richly earned—and are dedicating that, too, to the Royal service. ‘ We are charmed with the little house and all its fittings (writes Mr. Martin in a private letter), but especially the view and the glass covered...”

“...MRS MALCOLM BURNS (nee GETGOOD). All Chefusians will be sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Burns, soon after the birth of her second daughter, Elizabeth. Mrs. Burns was for many years on the Staff of the Prep. School at Chefoo, and is remembered with affection by all who knew her, especially by those who were members of her form. Mr. Burns writes, “ You who have known Norah will realize the privilege that has been mine to have had her love for so long and her companionship and fellowship in marriage for two years. She illuminated God’s Word to me, and I recall some of her favourite quotations: ' The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me ’ (and He has done so, receiving her into His Eternal Joy) ; ‘ As for God His way is perfect MERVYN ANDREW. The news of Mervyn Andrew’s death on May 18th, after a very short illness, came as a shock to many of his friends in Toronto. The funeral was held on Saturday, May 20th. Mr. Brownlee conducted the Service, and the pall-bearers were Douglas Moore...”

I would like to say that nothing has given me greater pleasure than the touch with Chefoo both in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. I have very pleasant memories of the Chinese restaurant and some lively meals in it.” ELSPETH CHRISTOPHER (nee WILLS) and her husband, have now been at Hoddesden a year (her husband is the Congregational Minister) and have settled down very happily.
