“...Newsletter. No. 19. JULY, 1937 Chefoo Schools Great Britain Association X Branch. SECRETARY’S NOTES. The Newsletter. The response to our request for news for this issue has been rather discouraging. We realise that Old Chefusians share in the hectic rush of modern day life, but we do feel that they could do more to help in the production of our Newsletter by sending news and articles for publication. The Secretary is sorry that no article on the Coronation has been sent in when it is known that a number of Old Chefusians were fortunate spectators of the Procession. The prize for the best article sent in for this issue has been awarded to Mildred Porter. News and copy for the next issue should reach the Assistant Editor before October 5th. List of Members. With this issue we are including the list of names and addresses of N. American members of the C.S.A. as supplied by the local Secretary, Marion Taylor, to whom we are grateful for all that she does for the Association. Next year it is...”

It is a help if those who hope to attend will notify the Secretary beforehand in order that the necessary accommodation may be reserved. This will be additional to the annual Tennis Singles Championship Cups, which are provided out of the General Fund of the Association. For this Competition each House in the Boys’ School will be linked up with a House in the Girls’ School. We have not yet heard how the Houses...”

“...From “ China’s Millions,” May, 1937, we understand that : “ There has been considerable sickness in the Schools at Chefoo. There had been about 150 cases of influenza among the children and staff since the Spring Term commenced. There had been also a further outbreak of measles and mumps among the scholars. Miss Adams had gone to Chefoo from the C.I.M. Hospital in Shanghai, to render assistance.” Erratic Vapourings. Nineteen eleven—a Chefoo lit almost entirely by oil; no bund beyond the Telegraph Office, and what there was of it was very narrow ; no breakwater or mole ; hardly any hotels or shops ; no cabarets or bars ; no Bank House—in fact, hardly any buildings east of the French Houses ; no ’buses, not because they were on strike ; no cars—That’s enough, now tell us what was there. Oh ! one boat-house ; three schools, assorted ; one Hospital, one San, one Iso, and the Nobs of Adam and his family. Anything else ? I don’t know—I wasn’t there. ’Member— . . . when the Northern Party came...”
