|a This unique Virtual Reality (VR) video is best viewed using a VR headset in order to achieve full immersion into the three-thousand years old Zoroastrian ritual, the Yasna. Originating in ancient pre-Islamic Iran, the full-length three-hour ritual, of which this 3-minute cut provides a taster, was filmed in Mumbai 2017 by Chouette Films with cutting edge spherical video technology. The video depicts the key messages of the Yasna ritual in a creative format. Led by the voice of a Zoroastrian priest, the viewer gains insights into the meaning of the ritual actions and recitations presented in the VR film. The Yasna is a story of the human soul travelling through the universe. The ritual begins with act of fetching water from the well - just as the human soul comes into the world - and ends with water being poured back to the well - in the same way as our souls return to where they came from. Since non- Zoroastrians are barred from witnessing the Yasna ritual as performed in fire temples, and the ritual has been abandoned by the Zoroastrian religious minority communities in Iran, this installation opens new horizons while preserving a valuable endangered cultural heritage for posterity |
