Abstract:
The National Reconstruction Authority came up with various earthquake resistant house designs after the 2015 earthquake. All of the designs emphasise banding walls to other structural elements of the house. These two hoarding boards in the Nepali language provide instructions on (1, left) earthquake resistant roof construction design via a detailed drawing and (2, right) the use of cement mortar in stonework walls. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’. The photographic collection was curated by Khem Shreesh of Social Science Baha in collaboration with Emily Homolka of UBC’s School of Information, with additional support from Emily Amburgey and Jonathan Eaton of UBC’s Department of Anthropology.
