Report on the Trade of Chefoo for the Years 1903-05

The trade of this port has shown a gradual increase during the x0t«l value of
years under review, the figures of the gross trade values being trade.
5,535,590Z. for 1903, 5,825,736Z. for 1904 and 6,671,367?. for 1905.
Foreign imports decreased slightly during the year 1904, but
they have risen again during 1905, showing an increase of 283,1121.
over the figures for 1903 and of 749,8472. over 1904.
An increasing amount of the trade is finding its way into Japanese
hands, and a fleet of small Japanese steamers keeps up constant
communication between Japan, Weihaiwei, Port Arthur, Dalny,
Corea and Chefoo, besides a considerable "inland waters" traffic
with Antung, Tatungkou and Yangchiaokou. Of a total tonnage
of 3,499,961 tons entered and cleared during the year 1905,1,699,352
tons were British, 325,938 tons Japanese and 481...”

“...Piece-goods.
Watches and
clocks.
There is a large and growing demand in the Chefoo market for
stores of many classes, such as tinned and bottled goods, jams,
biscuits, soaps and evaporated cream. These articles, together with
Manchester goods, form the basis of the British import.
There is an immense field for lamps, particularly in cheap
varieties. American firms are making the chief progress in intro-
ducing lamps owing to their willingness to supply samples, a method
which is of the greatest value in dealing with Chinese buyers. Local
dealers are willing to accept and pay for samples, and there is no
doubt that the Chinese like to see what they are buying.
In spite of the deplorable condition of the roads there is a growing
demand for bicycles. The grant of a foreign settlement would
ensure a few good roads and bicycles would then find a ready sale.
Piece-goods are imported in large quantities, but are purchased
entirely through Shanghai houses.
