“...Ichang. New German steamer. New Japanese steamer. Enterprise of the Japanese steamship company. The total trade for the past year amounts to 3,651,505/., the Haikuan tael being taken at a valuation of 2s. 11 \cl., as against 3s. 1 {d. in 1900. This sum is made up of:— (a) Imports of foreign origin, 1,701,219/., of which 1,537,030/. represents the value of re-exports (almost entirely to Chungking). (b) Imports of native origin, 1,823,624/., the value of re-exports being 1,724,132/. This latter sum is made up of 154,700/., Chinese cotton yarn imported from Shanghai and forwarded on to Chung- king, whilst the remainder represents the value of the chief exports from Ssuch'uan to other ports in China; these consist mainly of opium, medicines, musk, raw silk and white wax. (e) Exports of local origin, 126,652/. The figures show a slight improvement on the preceding year which totalled with a higher rate of exchange, 3,592,080/., but fall considerably short of the record year 1899, when...”
