in Chef00. No Sumatra oil was imported.
The shark-fishing industry, which has been carried on by the
Japanese since 1908, was continued during the year from June to
October. Ten boats were engaged in this business, as compared
with nineteen in 1909.
Proposals were made during the year to establish a bean mill
with a view to developing the growth of the Soya bean, the oil
of which is held to be of great value, but no mill has yet been
established.
The agents of the shipping and banking firms removed their
headquarters from the Island to Port Edward, a change which is
much appreciated by native shippers on account of its convenience
and the saving of expenditure.
SHUTING.
The total number of steamers that called here during the year
was 529, with a total net tonnage of 450,000 tons, as compared
with 567 steamers with a total net tonnage of 481,291 tons in 1909.
