“...piculs. Except in this instance British cottons appear to be holding
their own.
Kerosene oil.—The import of American oil, which amounted
roughly to 2,850,000 gallons in 1911 and over 3,500,000 gallons in 1912,
is in this year a minus quantity, 720,000 gallons being re-exported
from Cliefoo stocks against an import of 270,000 gallons. Nearly
500,000 gallons of Sumatra oil were imported.
Matches.—Japanese matches show an increase, and now practically
monopolise the market. '
Cigarettes.—The value of cigarettes shows a slight decrease, but the
contest between the British-American Tobacco Company's cheap
products and the Japanese manufacturers is as keen as ever, and the
hideous rival posters still continue to disfigure the peaceful Chinese
landscape, even in remote villages.
The experiment of the British-American Tobacco Company in
growing tobacco in the neighbourhood of Wei-Hai-Wei, which was
commenced about five years ago, is apparently proving a success.
