Notes

Abstract:
Job Ludolphus (Hiob Ludolf), 1624-1704, published his New History of Ethiopia in Latin at Frankfurt in 1681: he also compiled lexicons and grammars of Amharic, although he never visited the country. His New History was based on the testimony of Ethiopian visitors to Europe, and Portuguese Jesuit missionary accounts of the country. -- The translator of this edition was John Phillips (1631-1706), a nephew of John Milton, who also translated Jean-Baptiste Tavernier’s Voyages in the East (1675) and other travel literature.
