“...becomes operational from 1 st November 1991.
Have you ever played that game in which a word is called out and you shout out your immediate association with it?
I have found that most Chefusians when you mention ‘Lighthouse Island’ recall the bank of sand down which they rolled on the annual picnic there, over and over until they reached the bottom. There was something satisfying in this blissful moment of forgetting all else and rotating downwards on the warm soft sand. There is perhaps scope for the psychologist to analyse this phenomenon.
In actual fact when our Chefoo group, led by Arthur Smith, went to the Island in 1984 the bank of sand had sadly gone with the passage of years. The beach is now level, and in the sand were stones and seaweed.
I think that the reason why rolling down the sand bank gave such satisfaction was that momentarily such Chefoo problems as homesickness and school tests could be rolled into oblivion. The Psalmist says, “Roll your burden on the Lord.” (Ps 55 v.22)...”

“...elite typewriter with a murky ribbon’ which was found to be 'dismaying' and ‘disheartening’ with a very poor standard of proof reading. The fact is, I am a nurse and have no idea about printing methods. Having been press-ganged into typing out the items on my Amstrad Word Processor which has a dot matrix printer, the cheapest and quickest method I could find of producing the magazine was to have my sheets of A4 typing reduced to A5 and copied. This is what I did. I thought that I was doing the Association as service (having burned the candle at both ends of my normal working day) by producing a magazine at all. Apologies and I hope that I have done better this time.
I may as well make the most of my position and ask if any one out there can help me in establishing a family tree on my father’s side. He was Dr George Arthur Cox who sailed for China, from India, with CIM in December 1887 on P & O Steamer Brindisi. He married Miss Lily Thomas in October 1891 in Shanghai Cathedral. They worked in...”

“...THANK YOU THANK YOU
At the Reunion (Great Britain) I was called to the front and presented with a cheque for £462.50 (Sterling) donated by many members of the Association in recognition of my forty years as Treasurer. Belatedly I had discovered that a letter had been sent out so I was unable to stop it, but the amount on the day left me dumb-founded and any words that I said then were totally inadequate. Chefoo has, of course, meant so much to me and to our whole family in successive generations so I have been very happy to do this task which kept me in touch with so many over the years.
What should I do with this very generous gift is the question I am still sorting out. A few days before the Reunion my fifteen year old freezer finally gave up and as a bumper crop of raspberries were fast ripening in my garden a new freezer was a priority. My next purchase was a good up-to-date atlas as overthe past decades there have been so many changes in once familiar names and boundaries. The balance...”

We also visited Tonbridge where my parents were born and drove past Cornford House in Tunbridge Wells, but did not have time for a visit. It was great to see the country where my ancestors settled when they came from Normandy, France years ago.
ESTHER (FULLER) COLLIER (1969-80) I just got married - July 6th 1991. Don Collier (my husband) is getting his PhD at University of Toronto in plant physiology.
FRANCES DUNLAP I was born in Chefoo on Temple Hill - in the third stone house, Dr Dunlap, my father, was at Temple Hill Hospital, but we left China in 1927, before things were too bad. I attended the Prep School, as a day student, riding each day in a rickshaw to school. There were five of us all bom there, Dr Joe Dunlap PhD, Dr D Logan Dunlap MD, myself, Dr Robert Dunlap MD - has page 5...”

“... doctor in Pakistan, still does some volunteer mission work, and sister Mrs Nornie Gross. I finished the four years at the Prep School, and remember a good deal of the area around it. In 1981 my two eider brothers and my sister took a trip to China visiting Chefoo (Yantai) of course, and even got into our old house. It was very interesting and rewarding, as well as nostalgic. It was fun to travel there with so much of the family and compare notes.
RALPH EISENSTADT (1939-42) Roz and I are proud grandparents of Carrie Elizabeth (two years old in October) and Megan Eisenstacft (five months), daughters of our son Michael. My parents DR WALTER and LOTTE EISENSTADT are ninety three and eighty eight respectively and fondly remember Chefoo. SOME of you may remember him as the school’s dentist, who used to bring the latest news (gathered from BBC sources) to the internees at Temple Hill.

“... Home.
MARTHA PHILIPS (Staff 1937-43) writes in July 1991 - ‘I’ve had two interesting things happen recently. One evening as I was just finishing my evening bicycle exercise there was a phone call. “Is this Martha Philips. Did you ever teach at Chefoo?” Needless to say my heart did a couple of flops while I found out who it was. It was STANLEY NORDMO. He and his wife were here and we spent a fair part of two days together. He has studied medicine and practised a iifetime as a doctor and is now retired. Then, last evening there was a knock at the door. A tall young stranger with his little son was there - BILL HANNA, (Chefoo Malaysia in the ‘60’s) the son of GRANT HANNA (Chefoo 1932-1942). He told me of his grandmother’s, Mrs CORA HANNA’s (Chefoo Staff 1937-43), death recently (at age 98). We had a good, howbeit short, visit. Bill is now a member
of Wycliffe and has had several years in Thailand..We keep extremely busy
here. At present, as guests, we have 145 - 155 Junior High and High School...”

ELEANOR RICHARDSON (GONDER) (1917-20) My husband, Dr Oscar B Richardson, Ophthalmologist, retired in 1988. He has built eight boats, grows all his own flowers from seed, is deep into computer life, but most of all serves God with me in our Baptist Church. He excels in Bible Study and is also past president of the Canadian Bible Society in our area. I myself am very involved in our Church also in community work - am on the Board of Directors for Anson House - a Senior Citizen’s Residence. We both teach English to ‘newcomers' in Canada, through the Trent Valley Literacy Association. Our grandson, Todd Richardson, is an army cook and will soon be going to Israel, working with the United Nations. His wife, Serena, was in the Gulf War for six months, working in the Air Force repairing helicopters - now stationed in Halifax. We also have a charming grand-daughter...”

“...entertained by Titus Lee and his wife. Titus is the son of Lee Gee Shing who was brought up on the same compound as the Rouses in Tung Shen west of Chefoo and later became an evangelist in Chefoo, Taiwan and Singapore. In September Irene and her friend, Mrs Vina Plumb, had a two week holiday in Bermuda, an enjoyable time with the waves lapping on the shore, and meeting many interesting people - including BILL and VERA TAYLOR there on holiday in the first week.
REV H NORMAN SIBLEY I left Chefoo with my sister BEATRICE (from the Girls’ School) in early 1912. I came to the USA, with my family, from Shanghai. My CIM parents were in the centre of China, in Hubei Province, where I was born. I started Chefoo at the age of eight, and because of the distance and expense could only go home to my parents every other year or so. When I arrived at Chefoo I was put in a dormitory room with six or eight other boys. A teacher came in for prayers that first morning. She had us memorize a Bible verse: ‘And...”

“...children are spread from Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Ontario, we have the joy of seeing them occasionally. We always anticipate the Chefoo reunions in Toronto and wish the very best for our Association.
ALAN STEWART (1947-48) Writing in January 1991 Alan tells of his work with radio ministry to the Middle East through Impact Communications including their new venture ‘Contact Conversions’ which is ‘a regularly scheduled print ministry to pick up where the former radio programme left off’. They have been encouraged by the response of this.
ISABEL TAYLOR (1911-22) My sister GRACE HARRIS and I continue to live at ‘Fellowship Towers’, a Seniors' Residence in Toronto. We enjoy the comforts and convenience of living here as well as visits with, or from family and friends. Most Thursday evenings we attend the OMF weekly prayer meeting at 1052 Avenue Road. ROSEMARY BAKER (Chefoo 1927-37) is a real ‘good Samaritan' to us and MARJORIE (TULL) MacBETH and MARGARET BUNTING in chauffeuring us from time to time...”

AMY MOORE (widow of Percy - in Chefoo in the 1920s) Amy writes in her Christmas 1990 letter of the year’s experiences, one highlight being the six week visit from her daughter Dorothy from England just before Easter. 1990 was the CIM/OMF Centennial year for Australia, so there were many special events connected with that. She was to go to England in September to celebrate her daughter Dorothy’s 25th Wedding Anniversary, and then to make her home in England. She doesn’t know yet where she will settle.
