While he was Secretary for the Schools in Chefoo Mrs. Andrews taught in the'Co-Ed. In 1971 Mr & Mrs Andrews left their home in Philadelphia to take up residence at Lammer-muir House, the O.M.F. Retirement Home in Lancaster, Pa. But because of declining health Mr. Andrews was moved in March 1973 to the nearby Calvary Fellowship Homes' infirmary. On Aug.6th 1977 Mr. Andrews celebrated his 100th birthday, with all his immediate family present. A week and a day later he awoke in the glorious presence of his Saviour and Lord. Kenneth M. Campbell, Seattle, Washington,USA. Kenneth was born in 1896. His parents were missionaries in Fukien province. Former Chefooites send their deepest sympathy to Kenneth's companion for 55 years, and to his sons and daughters, and to his brother David (Grampus Minor)who lives in San Diego, Cal. H.S.C. John Herbert left Chefoo in 1924, having a certificate for swimming 3 miles, and a great love of 'soccer', an understanding of all who were rebellious at Chefoo, and all who were not. His fine upright bearing was, no doubt, the result of Mr. Arthur Taylor's('Schneider') training at drill, but most of all he left school with the important foundation for Christian living. He loved to speak of Chefoo, and always enjoyed the 'Mag.' and Reunions. John came to Australia after leaving school, married in 1938, and till his 3...”

“...Winifred Platt was born in East Szechuan where her parents were C.I.M. missionaries. In 1913 Win left the Chefoo Girls' School and came to Melbourne, Australia, with her parents and brothers and sisters. For many years she worked in the office of one of our big department stores, all the while a zealous Christian who also took part in community work. In 1969 she was married to Mr. Ted. Jepson and they went to live in Adelaide. There she was associated with the Baptist Church and made many friends. Early in 1977 Win's husband died, and she wrote that she hoped to help the Red Cross, and might accept an invitation to visit a friend in Rugby, England, if her doctor approved. However, that was not to be, because 6 weeks after Win's husband's death she succumbed to double pneumonia and died on May 5th. Her many friends and two sisters still living will miss her greatly, for she was a warm-hearted loving soul. But it is only for a season, till the Day of Reunion dawns for us all and the shadows...”

“...Current Chefoo News: Chefoo School, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia; Extract from a Chefoo News Letter Nov./77. 'You'd love Thursday assemblies this term! John Miller, Headmaster is sharing with the children some of the stories from Chefoo's history that Sheila (his wife) has prepared for him. We can hardly wait for the book on Chefoo to be published. The first sample chapters have been posted to O.M.F. Headquarters in England to be vetted. Chefoo School's one hundred years of history is fascinating. Think of the thrill of combing through a school-boy's diary, written in 1912 Photographs, sketches, plans, old magazines, returned questionaires and 200 letters from all over the world are yielding their secrets these days as Sheila probes for each new chapter for the book-to-be. It is demanding work, requiring hours of reading and sifting before writing. "It is a secret joy to find, The task assigned, Beyond our powers, For then, if ought of good be wrought, Clearly the praise is His, not ours"...”

“...Blossom petals drifting down. Then we had Ghenghis Khanan eastern version of a barbecue-cooking over portable gas rings. Our children enjoyed playing with the church youngsters. Missionary children are often self-conscious about mixing with local folk and maybe getting stared at, so it was lovely to have such an easy, natural time together. Margaret Knight has been on the Nanae Chefoo Staff since 1964 and goes on furlough in December. Jennifer Dunn, who attended Chefoo School, Malaysia, and has taught for five years in Western Canada, will take her place. From a letter from Mrs. T. Surbeck, dated Feb.23, 1977. (Re: Chefoo School, Baguio, Philippines) Of the 25 children and staff here now only 5 are not at present learning a new musical instrument. The trumpet, piano, recorders, ukelele and guitars playing - and dogs howling- all together, and the play noises outside - gives background noise to life out of school! Music is fun and also a real way to serve the Lord, and it has a large part in...”

As of June 1978 the English section of the school will close down and the children will attend Faith Academy in Manila, where already a number of the teen age O.M.F., children from the Philippines and from other O.M.F. fields are attending. One of the Faith Academy staff members will visit Chefoo School, Malaysia to see how Faith Academy, an American School, can better help non-American pupils whom they receive. “...Chefoo School Reunion in Tunbridge Wells Saturday, June 18th, 1977. It didn't seem so long since we had been there the previous year but it was good to meet old friends again at the Chinese Chow in St. John's Church Hall, Tunbridge Wells. Beatrice and Dorothy Stark, Ailsa Carr and Edith(Bruce)Staines had chosen our menu from local "Take Away" shops. It was delicious and plenty for all. Norman Cliff had brought along copies of the interesting book he has just written on the first twenty years of his life. "Courtyard of the Happy Way". Then we hurified off to Cornford House, where we all packed into their dining room for the great attraction of this reunion, to hear and see slides by Mr. Ben Tompsett from nearby Hatfield. He is the Chairman of the East Sussex Fruit Committee and is a leading authority on fruit growing. In the autumn of 1976 he had visited China as the guest of the Chinese Academy of Agriculture and with the backing of Kew Gardens and the East Mailing (Kent) Research Station...”

The first twelve years in China were in the far West, in Szechuan province, among Buddhists, Taoists and followers of Confucius With their two young sons they spent time on the Tibetan border, where they were six days journey from the nearest Europeans, and eight from the nearest doctor. For several years Mrs Bazire did not see another European woman. But in 1935 the Communists under Mao T'se Tung swept down in the Long March, and Mrs Bazire fled with the children to Chefoo School for the children of the missionaries and Western business community, on the North Coast of China. Their relief was short lived, as the Japanese had invaded China, and when Japan entered the Second World War all foreign nationals were rounded up and interned. The Bazires were put in a camp of 1,500 business people and missionaries in 1942. Mrs.Bazire took charge of the music in the camp, and organised a first class classical orchestra - for a Salvation Army Band and a jazz group were among fellow internees. Meanwhile Canon Bazire spent his time as camp stoker, baker, and then shoe repairer. Their sons were educated in the camp school and matriculated there, as after the war the exams set in the camp were recognised by the authorities in England. After liberation in 1945 the Bazires returned to England, where the Canon served in the diocese of Southwark, London until he retired in 1975. In this time he was Archdeacon of Southwark and became the first Archdeacon of Wandsworth in...”

'After consultation between the University and O.M.F. leaders in Indonesia, it seemed right that I should complete a full year at Petra before asking for language study time. So I will teach from Aug. to Dec. and then possibly go elsewhere for concentrated language study. I've greatly enjoyed this first term with the students. My main contact has been with the 50 or so 3rd and final year students of the English department as we've covered aural comprehension, poetry and essay writing together . The student senate have...”

“...300 Steelcase Road, #19, Markham, Ontario. L3R 2W2)' 'What's that got to do with Chefoo?' you ask. Cast your mind back to those green cards that used to hang in our dormitories, or were used as markers in our bibles. They listed a scripture reading for every day in the year, and if you persisted, you could cover the whole 66 books of the Bible in 5 years. The author was and is 'Scripture Union' who also sponsored the C.S.S.M.(Children's Special Service Mission')meetings on the beach in the summer holidays, similar to gatherings held in many other parts of the world. Chefooite and ex-China missionary Bill Tyler after retiring as Director of O.M.F. (alias C.I.M.) for Canada, a year and a half ago was asked to become General Director of Canadian Scripture Union. Do you remember special times when instead of peanut butter on bread, the plates at the door into the playground held 'caterpillars', those fresh, crusty cakes with a fork-marked top that gave them their name? My daughter Lucinda Jackson has a sister-in-law living in Toronto and is planning to drive me to the 1978 Chefoo Reunion. It's an exciting plan, and I do hope it comes true. There are so many of my classmates there. My father went to China on the same boat as Mr. Hanna. I have found a photograph of them, taken in 1902, in Chinese dress, standing by a well loaded wheel-barrow, by a brick building which might be the 'go-down'... the word brings back the periodic visits to the go-down in Shanghai, and the excitement of seeing the trunk lid lifted and who-knows what inside. “...Edward Wells-1907-15 (10 Berkeley Road, Millburn, N.J. 07041) (Feb.'77) Two recent experiences bear indirectly on Chefoo (a) A colony of German missionaries have their headquarters at Schooley's Mountain in N.J. At the head of the list was one from 'Chifoo' I sent him a Christmas card ask- ing him if his birthplace was Chefoo or Chufoo, the home town of Confucius. He replied that it was the former, called 'Yentai' by the Chinese. He remembers every street corner of the city though he moved with his family when he was 12 years old(in 1949) to South Korea.
