Before coming west he wrote to Miss Anne Burgess, a former school friend from Chefoo to say that he planned a one-day visit to Victoria and how about getting some Chefooians together. “...both in Mission work, one in Korea and the other in S. America. JACK had also met Dr. Derek Martin whose father was in the C. I. M. and whose brother GORDON was on the Staff at Chefoo. MORE FROM N. AMERICA HENRY LUCE Let us now praise famous men. Heresy in this egalitarian age with its cult of the average? But heresy or not, there is something refreshing about a man who was not average. With so much adulation given to the lowest common denominators in this day of the very common man, how pleasant now and again to find greatness. Rather nice, too, to see it in Chefoo ranks. The New York Times has trumpeted. Time, Life, Fortune, Architectural Forum, House and Home, and Sports Illustrated, Luce creations all, have each told his story. Journalists from all over the world have added their tributes. Comes the turn of Chefoo with two personal postscripts to the HENRY LUCE saga from two contemporary Chefusians. (N. Am. Secy. HMB)...”

“...himself and what he stood for. " Extracts from replies of Mrs. Luce to CARRINGTON GOODRICH and also to VIVIAN GONDER (on behalf of the Toronto Branch) "I wish that I could write more than this brief note to send my heartfelt thanks for your wire. Chefoo was always a vivid memory to HARRY, and the many friends he made there occupied a special niche in his heart. It is a source of great comfort to know how many have shared in spirit in my grievous loss. I hope you will be able in due time to give my thanks and good wishes to all the members of the Chefoo Schools Association for whom your kind message spoke. " ....."Memories of China and of Chefoo always had a special place in Mr. Luce's heart and therefore messages such as yours are especially welcome. The outpouring of affectionate admiration for my dear husband has been both staggering and deeply gratifying. These and the 'happy memories' you mention, are indeed a source of great solace at this grievous time. "...”
