“...2. CHEFOO SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION President: REV. P. A. BRUCE Vice-Presidents: BISHOP F. HOUGHTON MR. H. F. JOYCE MR. J. B. MARTIN MR. W. D. MUDDITT * .• jfe + EDITORIAL In Britain during the past few months we have heard a great deal about wage freezes, financial crises and other similar difficulties. Alas.' We in the Chefoo Schools Association are also in the throes of a financial crisis. Our issue of December 1965 which was well received by our members cost more than we could afford. Further economies in production have been made since then to bring future issues within our budget but this issue is a special effort to economise so that we can cover the debts we incurred a year ago. Our readers have been most appreciative and considerate. We look forward to hearing more news of old friends as this will be the main feature of our magazine in the future. Confucius remarked "The palest ink is better than the most retentive memory". NEWS OF OLD CHEFUSIANS GREAT BRITAIN BRANCH GENERAL COMMITTEE...”

“...returned from a completely fascinating year in Russia. PAUL had completed his undergraduate course in Russian at the University of Toronto, his M. A. at the University of Rochester, across the border, and a year as fellow at the University of Toronto, working towards his Ph. D. His next step was a year at the University of Moscow as an exchange student. This, on his return, rated him a half page interview in the Globe 6 Mail Toronto's leading paper. PAUL has also given an exclusive interview’ to the Chefoo Magazine, but necessarily shorter than the metropolitan one.' While in Moscow, he and his wife had an apartment in the famous skyscraper building that dominates the University. When the academic...”

“...to meet DORIS at a Chinese dinner in the latter's garden. Guests present were, GRACE (TAYLOR) HARRIS, JESSIE JENNINGS, OLIVE JOYCE, LILLIAN (FERGUSON) NODWELL, MARY RIRIE, MARION TAYLOR and KATHLEEN (COATES) THOMPSON. After a leisurely dinner with, of course, authentic bowls, rice and chopsticks, accompanied by the usual nostalgic do-you-remember's, DORIS showed slides of her travels, including countless pictures of Chefusians encountered en route. A recent number of the magazine LIFE produced Chefoo news of ancient vintage. This is not surprising as HENRY LUCE'S influence, although he has retired, still probably pervades the magazine. The first of a series of most informative articles on China told of the Boxer Rebellion period, and included was a large photograph of missionaries and others in Peking at the time. Second from the right in the front row, aged 5, is our august North American chairman CARRINGTON GOODRICH. Here is his reply to a letter about it. "Life has given me a notoriety...”

“...6. street, in the corridor, even in church to comment on the picture. Just now a fellow in the men's washroom I never saw before, did the same. And the tennis and swimming club to which we belong has posted the thing on the bulletin board, with a big red circle around my name. I trust the Chefoo Mag, finds it too expensive to print. I must give HARRY LUCE a piece of my mind, as a one-time sub-prefect should to a onetime 2nd former - I was five at the time. Incidentally the photograph first appeared in Arthur H. Smith's China in Convulsion, along with a finding list. For some reason unknown to me the Fenn family was not brought into the group; otherwise another prospective Chefoo boy (HENRY) would have been pictured. " CARRINGTON adds "The only personal news I can give you is that another book has appeared for which I am largely responsible: Western and Central Asians in China under the Mongols, by Ch'en Yuan, tr. and annot. by Ch'ien Hsing-Hai and L. C. G. (Carrington) Mr. Ch'ien had to...”

“...sunshine, in contrast to the rainy climate of Port Angeles, Wash. We had a very happy visit, and were amazed at how many details we could recall of the far-off Chefoo days.' Although 1 don't know-many of those mentioned in the magazine, I do enjoy reading of their accomplishments, and feel a glow of pride in being an alumnus of such a fine school as the C. I. M. P. S. .' LILLIAN FERGUSON NODWELL, after half a life time on an Ontario farm, moved to Toronto on the death of her husband. There she is able to devote more of her time to her driving interest in art. She has had some of her paintings hung in exhibitions in Toronto. Her daughter, Nina, after working behind the scenes in the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival, and also in New York at the Metropolitan Opera, won a scholarship from Stratford which will enable this talented Chefoo daughter to study in Europe. MARY FERGUSON TEAGUE lives in Sarasota, Florida. HENRY FERGUSON is in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he manages a motel. From...”

“...into their preparation. Journey's end.' Will we ever forget the comradeship, the fun, the impressive sights that packed our days. The protective hand of the Lord sheltered us all the way, allowing only one flat tire and a bit of engine trouble, but no sickness whatever. And then the joyous welcome we received from those who had worked so hard to prepare for us. For members of the Great Britain branch - Chefoo Fund The Committee of the Chefoo Fund would like to express its deep gratitude to the nine persons who very generously responded to the appeal sent out in 1965 for support of the Chefoo Fund. As interest in this Fund is evidently so small, the balance has now been distributed among the sons and daughters of OMF parents at present studying in universities and colleges. The Fund has now been formally closed with deep regret....”
