“...CHEFOO SCHOOLS ASSOCI^
1058 AVENUE ROAD
Newsletter No. 27 TORONJ&yO 1941
Chefoo Schools Great Britain
Association % Branch.
Editorial.
As the stream of war flows, like “ China’s Sorrow ”, on its wide and treacherous course, it sweeps into its current yet more lands and peoples, and with them (trivial in perspective but of personal concern to us) yet more Of our former school-fellows. The schools themselves, we are glad to know, carry steadily on. Of some Chefusians who are in the Services we have cheering news; of others we can know little at present. There can be few of us now in these islands who have not seen, and perhaps suffered, the devastation of air-raids. There can be few of us indeed—on either side of the Atlantic, or in either hemisphere, for that matter—who are not now deeply and directly involved, with whatever reluctance, in the issues of the conflict.
We cannot yet see clearly the larger good which must spring from these vast evils. But we shall have grasped something of...”

“...able to publish this issue and trust that it will bring some pleasure and interest to many of our members who are otherwise out of touch with their old friends and acquaintances of Chefoo days.
As our Editor says, we are all affected to some degree by war time conditions and these make it impossible for us to carry on the activities of our Association in the same way as we should like to in the happier days of peace.
We hope to publish another issue in December and news should reach the News-Editors before November 5th.
Members are reminded that the annual subscription for the Association is 2/6, not 2/3 which was clearly stated in the last issue as being the subscription for the “ Chefusian ” which is the magazine published at the schools in Chefoo.
The addresses of the principal officers of the Association are always printed on the back coverof each issue. This appears to have escaped the attention of some members.
A Compliment to Cheefoo.
The following is an extract from an article in...”

“...A Letter of Thanks
China Inland Mission, Chefoo, Sung.
January, 1941.
Dear China “ Old Girls ”,
We find it very hard indeed to express our thanks to you for brightening up our dining-room by your gift of curtains. They are just the right colour and make such a difference to everything.
Thanking you once more,
Yours sincerely,
The “ Present Girls.”

“...Millions tribute was paid to his long, fruitful and (to himself) costly service in China. He was for a time on the staff of the Boys’ School at Chefoo ; and the Schools have never had a more devoted friend or prayer-supporter. After his retirement to this country in 1928, Mr. Bird became, with Mrs. Bird, a welcome and familiar figure at Chefoo functions. His transparent sincerity, his utter self-forgetfulness in the interests and welfare of others, made him genuinely beloved. We shall greatly miss him. Our sympathy goes out to Mrs. Bird in her greater loss.
MRS. D. URQUHART.
Chefoo lost another very old friend when Mrs. David Urquhart was fatally injured in a motor accident on February 15th. It was before 1900 that Miss MacCormick (as she then was) went to China from Australia; and her long service with the C.I.M. included several years at Chefoo. On their retirement in 1928 she settled, with Mr. Urquhart, in Scotland: where (to quote from China’s Millions)—“ she was true to the best traditions...”

“...Reunion.
Once more, in January 1941, it was impracticable for us to hold a formal Winter Reunion in London. Not that the C.I.M. Headquarters at Newington Green have ceased to exist : they are standing yet, though not without some loss of glass and plaster; and it will be a happy day indeed when we can hold the Reunion there once again.
However, between twenty and thirty Chefusians were able to assemble in Wardour Street on Saturday, January 4th, for the now highly traditional Chinese Chow and Chefoo Chat. Gossip and food (despite the rationing) seemed more appetizing than ever. Chins and chop-sticks were wagged by the following :
Mr. J. N. Duncan; Mary and Edith Bruce; Margaret, Jack, Beresford and Stanley Weller; Joyce Mollison; Jean, Robertson and William Sinton; Contie Stark; Doris and Hilda Briscoe; Edna Clarke; Alison and Mildred Porter; Doris and Muriel Rouse; Berta Bird; Margaret Olesen; J. R. Jordan; S. A. Paradissis; David Barling; Stanley Rowe and Howard Joyce.

“...DR. DAVID WATSON and MISS LOIS BLOTT were married at Shanghai on 16th April. Dr. Watson’s mother, as Miss BEGG, was at Chefoo together with Miss BUTTON, now Mrs. ARTHUR TAYLOR. Dr. and Mrs. Watson are hoping to proceed to Tali to help in the new hospital to be opened there, in conjunction with Dr. J. McDonald and Miss Mabel Soltau.
JESSIE M. MOORE was married to DAVID BENTLEY-TAYLOR at Shanghai on March 4th. Mr. Bentley-Taylor was, for a time, teaching at Chefoo.
JAMES McLACHLAN. His Mother writes : “ James has been badly
wounded, while attacking an M.E.I09 over Malta. Another enemy ’plane attacked him out of the sun and fired a cannon shell through his left arm, which will be a great loss to him. He managed to bale out somehow and has made a good recovery. I had a cable a week ago to say that he was * awaiting passage home ’ for his new arm and hoping to beoutthere flying again in six months ! God has been very good in sparing his life, and I pray that he may have courage and patience...”
