“...Newsletter No. 23.
JUNE, 1939.
Chefoo Schools Great Britain
Association X Branch.
Letters from Chefoo.
Hullo, there ! At last Xmas has come ! We awoke early this morning to the strains of “ Hark, the herald angels sing ” on the cornet, played by Mr. Fry right up at his attic window in the San.
Monday morning we spent in opening presents and rollerskating. During the morning two of the “ Sons,” Dr. Watson and Mr. Matthews, came and roller-skated with us.
In the afternoon we went over to the Prayer Room where a little red brick house was standing. Mr. Taylor then introduced us to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Dr. Broomhall, behind the house, was making it more interesting by playing the mouth-organ and speaking for the Dwarfs.
Snow White in the glass box turned out to be Santa Claus, Mr. Keeble, and Dr. Watson rode in on a donkey as Prince Charming, with Mr. Matthews as a groom.
After supper on Sunday we were sitting upstairs on little Prep, school chairs when suddenly the whole building...”

“...Chinese, and we, of course, couldn’t speak any Japanese. We wondered what was going to happen, but by dint of pointing towards the Compound and saying, “ English—home ; English— home ; English—home,” a great many times loudly, something seemed to penetrate eventually, and we were allowed to proceed on our way once more !
The British Ambassador to China recently visited Chefoo and was shown over the Co-Tuition Building.
Secretary’s Notes.
Reorganisation. In every growing concern there comes a time when reorganisation is necessary to cope with the extra work that is obviously caused by the progress made. So it is with our Association, and for some time the Secretary had been feeling that on passing the 400 mark in membership for our Branch some new plans should be made to share out between members of the Committee the many duties that have previously been borne by one or two of the principal officers. This mark was passed early this year—the membership is now 408—and accordingly, at our Committee...”

“...Evelyn Williamson, and Stanley Rowe—these members will make the arrangements for our Chefoo Reunions.
The Secretary will still continue to assist in the business side of the publication of the Newsletter and its despatch to members. His other duties will include the keeping of the Membership Register in which is also a record of all subscriptions received from members, the publication of the annual Address Book, correspondence with members and other Branches of the C.S.A., Old Chefusian colours, Committees, and general Branch affairs.
The Treasurer will continue to keep the Branch Subscription Register and the accounts of the Association. All subscriptions should be paid to the Treasurer except where members are replying at the same time to a Reunion Notice or communicating with the Secretary, when for convenience the subscription may be sent to these other officers concerned.
It is hoped that these new plans will result in an increased efficiency in the conduct of our Branch activities...”

“...eye familiar scenes about Chefoo. There was a series of competitions, and then some account of changes in Chefoo. Then the company sang some of the Chefoo songs. After refreshments, family prayers were conducted, and everyone joined in the Twenty-third Psalm.
Those present included :
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Andrew ; Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Brown ; Bert and Jack Carter ; Joan Croft ; Paul Evans ; Dennis Fulton ; Mr. and Mrs. J. Lester ; Mr. and Mrs. I. Morrison (Rachel Nicol) ; Clarence Preedy ; Mr. and Mrs. Seaman ; Margaret, Doris, and Grace Seaman ; also Mr. and Mrs. Martin and Miss Edwards of the School Staff.

A Reunion was held on November 19th, 1938, at a Chinese restaurant. At the conclusion of the “ Chinese Chow,” there was some discussion as to the possibility of a Chefoo week-end next summer at a place midway between New York, Toronto, and Chicago, but this has been found to be impossible.
Among those present at the Reunion were :
Mr. and Mrs. Brownlee ; Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes...”

“...Chefusian Weddings at Chefoo.
At the end of November two Old Chefusians, HENRY GUINNESS and MARY TAYLOR, were married, and this ceremony took place in the Memorial Hall. There was a splendid gathering there, and as befitted such an occasion, the best man, Dr. Jim Broomhall, the Rev. Fred Dreyer, who conducted the service, and several of the bridal party, were Old Chefusians. The reception was held in the Prep. School Dining Hall, which was decorated for the occasion, and prefects from the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools attended most efficiently to the wants of the guests. The speeches that followed were truly up to Chefoo standard.
Also in November RACHEL NICOLL was married to MR. IAN MORRISON, of the National Bible Society of Scotland. The ceremony took place in the familiar surroundings of the Union Church at Chefoo, while the reception which followed was held at “ Redlands,” the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rouse. Mr. G. P. Welch conducted the service, and his daughter, Beryl, was one of the...”

“...Tunghsien district, which had been recently held by Communists whom the Government completely annihilated, and was now uninhabited. The old Honan brigands were quick to avail themselves of the scope provided by the floods : now they are “k'an-san-p’an-dies" of a baser sort. Business men going north or south to buy stock found themselves relieved of various items. So the Government were preparing anti-pirate junks to raid them in their island lairs, and before long we may find, in the words of your Chefoo song :
