“...Newsletter No. 9.
APRIL, 1934
Chefoo Schools Great Britain
Association X Branch.
Is it worth while '! This question is asked by a writer in a recent issue of the “ Chefusian.”
It must have come to the surface in the life of many other literary “ organs ” and “ organisations ”—it certainly has in the case of “ Chefoo ” and the C.S.A. ! But, it is the fervent hope of the Committee that the days of such a doubt have left us for ever.
In asking the question for ourselves, the enthusiasm and support of our fellow Old Chefusian members of the C.S.A. are a sufficient affirmative reply—for them, we sincerely hope our efforts are producing a similar response !
For encouraging evidence we need only look at our steadily increasing membership—now 230—and our Chefoo Reunions. At our recent Winter Reunion we had another large gathering of Old Chefusians and friends, and it was really refreshing to hear all the “ Chefoo chatter ” !
Is it worth while ? It has been, it is, and we- must all co-operate so...”

“...time to time short reminiscences of past but unforgotten days at Chefoo. Here is the first—one which will seem very old to the modern and sophisticated Chefusian !
“ Why and When the Girls’ School got Lamps in their Dormitories ! ”
One evening, many years ago, in far-away Chefoo, a Headmistress and a Headmaster were strolling down a corridor of the Girls’ School. The little oil lamps suspended from the ceiling, threw circles of light in patches somewhat far apart. It was dark in the dormitories—the open doors iust enticing enough light in from the corridor to “ see to get to bed with ” !
Suddenly, to their surprise, the two “ Heads ” espied in the distance —a little half-clad figure, standing squarely under one of the corridor lamps. A little pile of clothes surrounded her—such a thing !—
Who was it? (I wonder !—Ed.)

“...in progress, as everything inside gave the impression of a gay evening— The Chefoo Winter Reunion was in full swing.
Regardless of the winter weather prevailing, sixty to seventy Chefusians and friends rallied for the supper, which was served at 6.30 p.m., and, joined by a few more who came later, stayed to enjoy the splendid programme supplied by local talent.
Note !—Toronto Chefusians are trying to get out of the habit of saying “ Chefoo-ite.” But some are finding it rather difficult, having been so thoroughly “ brought up on ” (so to speak) the Canaanites, Perizzites, Girgashites, etc. However, we agree (rather reluctantly !) with the Great Britain Branch that “ Chefusian ” is, no doubt, more acceptable !
The main part of the evening was taken up with an,illustrated lecture by Ken Evans on his trip to the Near East. Averrf Robinson kept us all amused with little anecdotes from his recent tour of China, Chefoo in particular, and gave us his impressions of “ Now ” as compared with ‘Then”...”

CHINA, AUSTRALIA AND THE EAST.
From Chefoo :—
The building operations in connection with the new Preparatory School and the Co-Tuition Classrooms are making good progress, as will be seen from the picture in this issue. The architect is Mr. de B. Robertson, who, no doubt, is greatly helped by his wife, who is an Old Chefusian !
An item of importance and great interest is the inauguration of the Chefoo General Omnibus Company, which has no less than five different services of Ford 'buses from the Ninghai Gate to the West Motor Station. The London Passenger Transport Board will soon be eclipsed, it seems !
Beach Road, from the Boys’ School Gate to Woodland Road, is being widened.
