“...ever since, the membership has been increasing by leaps and bounds and is now, by the goodness of God, not only a blessing to the youth of China, but to Comrades themselves. All over the country are Comradeship Branches, where, under the guidance of skilful leaders, Comrades meet together for prayer and study, and to work for the land in which they are so interested. What delightful parcels are sent out to various centres in China, and what joy and excitement is created in numbers of Chinese schools and homes as a result of Christmas gifts from their Comrades in the Home Countries, will be seen from many letters of appreciation published in Young China, the bi-monthly magazine of the Comradeship. This is a most delightful paper, containing thrilling articles written by missionaries on the field, some of whom are “ Old Girls ” and “ Old Boys ” (which fact alone speaks for itself!) and illustrated by typical scenes of that beautiful country so dear to many of us. “...strenuous rag to enliven things. Where “ Phineas ” goes the University Collegeite must follow, and when “Phineas” is abducted the trouble begins, though as a stolid wooden figure he has no attraction in himself. Unfortunately, the resulting scrap is inter-collegiate, and therein lies one of the disadvantages of London’s scattered colleges. There are now over sixty of these either directly or indirectly connected with the University, and these together form one of the greatest and most democratic schools of Higher Education, harking back in advantages to the “ good old times ” when the Universities were more the poor man’s opportunity than the rich man’s privilege. “ Peanut.” 7...”

“...progenitors. Shall we think of them as wasted material, neglected clay, capable of transformation into beautiful porcelain or at least vessels of great usefulness ? To achieve this end was, and is, the prime motive behind this great institution. The organization of “ Barnardo’s ” is extensive and complete, from its “ Ever Open Doors,” scattered up and down the country, to its central receiving homes, residential homes, hospitals, convalescent and cripples’ homes, “ Babies’ Castle,” day schools, technical schools, to its school for the blind and deaf, and also a home for incurables. “...MR AND MRS McCARTHY. It will be with mixed feelings of pleasure and regret that Chefooites will learn of the decision of Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy to return to Chefoo, owing to the breakdown in health of Dr. Judd. We Chefooites in England cannot be grateful enough for all that Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy have meant to us during their time here, both in their help and presence at all our Reunions, and also in their interest in the Association “ behind the scenes.” The date of their departure for China is not fixed, but we are sure that all Chefooites either residing in, or visiting London, will take any opportunity they have of saying good-bye to our President and Mrs. McCarthy. OXFORD RESULTS. News has just come to hand of the splendid results of the Oxford exams, held at Chefoo this year. Details will be published—we hope—in the China issue. Heartiest congratulations to all the successful candidates. THE WINTER REUNION Is fixed for the evening of Saturday, January 9th, to be held at Newington Green...”
