ready to start at the Chefoo School recently arrived from its exodus
in Kalimpong, India! Well, what of photos and what of memories?
Memories not only hark backwards in time but also look forward to
the future — and there lies 1991. For me, the 100th anniversary of
the arrival in that same Shanghai of my grandfather, Frank Joyce
— a young man just recently embarked from Australia with the
China Inland Mission. For others, perhaps a special return to China
on a C.S.A. Tour on the 40th anniversary of their earlier departure
from the land of their birth and schooling — Ruling this time
around. For you? Well, the receipt of your Chefoo Magazine with a
fresh compilation of "Songs from the Chefoo Schools." May these
songs not only transport you back to your youthful days of happy
wanderings but also carry you forward in 1991 with a fresh tune in
your heart (and a copy of Songs 1990 in your hand!) to your next
Chefoo Reunion for a real old school sing. Tra la la Chefoo!

SONGS 1990 — Vol. 83. No. 2
Greet we the School in whose honour we sing,
Whose fame is our trust and care!
Grateful affection to thee would we bring,
Proof by the deeds we dare.
Storing our minds with the lore of the past,
Secrets of Nature’s Art;
Fresh conquests making, we strive to the last
Nobly to play our part.
Chorus: Under the glow of a lamp that is lit
On the shores of an Eastern sea;
Daughters and sons, in loyalty knit,
Plight we our troth to thee.
(For Chefoo)
Stung by the icy blasts of the North,
Or jaded with South-wind blow,
Team against team to battle goes forth
To conquer a friendly foe.
Riding the billows, we rise and fall,
Straining with rhythmic swing;
Partners, we serve and return the ball,
Swift as a stone from a sling.
Chorus
(For Ruling)
Swiftly descending the slope in the snow,
On sledge or toboggan we glide:
Straining each sinew, our bodies aglow,
Over the track we stride:
Cooled in the depths of the mountain pool,
We frolic exultantly:
Climbing...”

1. School that we love,—to thee we owe
More than mere words can ever show,
Homage full reverent may we pay
To thee, and to thy Laws each day.
Refrain (for a 11 verses.)
0 Chefoo School, may God defend
Unstained thine Honour to the end!
2. School that we love,—thy Motto true
Imprint on every heart anew,
God’s Word, of Wisdom is the Source,
Who drinketh there gains vital force.
3. School that we love,—for others’ weal
Our parents tolled with selfless zeal,
Oh teach their children now to be
Loyal, Chefoo, to God and thee.
4. School that we love,—in work or play
Our utmost may we do each day;
Not for our own, but for thy fame
Enable us to "play the game."
5. School that we love,—when forth we go
May thy Faith in our hearts still glow,
That, as in Life our part we play,
Thine ideals still may guide our way.
6. Chefoo, in lands both near and far
Thy many scattered daughters are—
Present and Past alike, to thee
Still turn with changeless loyalty.

Divi canamus litore Serico

We would sing of this School on the Chinese shore:
Here skill may be won, and learning's store:
The will of our fathers' God was sought:
That will pursued good fortune brought.
Strength we may gain from the sea where we row,
From the open sky where the North winds blow:
Strength from our games and the waves where we swim:
And the hills we climb give strength of limb.
Light which the world from its ancient hoards
Or later lore to our search affords,
Here we may find that through...”

Hector is waiting and Daphne in the sea,
And Neptune to row across the bay,
Leave the others to their cricket,
Bumpy ground and making wicket,
While the south wind sends our oar-thrash up in spray.
To the boats, to the boats,
Hear the word from eager throats,
Where the boats are waiting handy,
Carried down by Kan Sampandy,
To the boats, to the boats, to the boats.
Calm seas look pretty, but there’s time for waves as well,
When the wind comes whistling over from the Bluff
There are days when oars get broken,
And the coach is too outspoken,
And half a dozen blisters seem enough.
But the sea, oh the sea,
There’s no better place to be.
Leave behind the playground dusty,
Leave behind the school books musty,
To the sea, to the sea, to the sea.
Stroke gets the glory, but Three does all the work,
With the backing of Bow and of Two,
And the blame goes to Cox when he steers us on the rocks,
But the victory belongs to all the Crew.
To the Crew, to the Crew...”

SONGS 1990 — VoL 83, No. 2
Praise God for these years! How much worship we owe Him
Who answered our faith and dispelled lying fears.
Chefoo and Ruling both taught us to know Him.
Thank God for these seventy years.
Chorus: In sunshine and shadow, by sea or on mountains,
The tale of the past speaks a message that cheers.
Secure we draw courage and hope from deep fountains:
Thank God for these seventy years.
In games strong and eager, to studies we’re bringing
Traditions of industry patient and keen,
Rejoicing in books and in music and singing,
Delight in things heard and things seen.
Enriched by the lore of the lands that we hail from,
And learning from China’s old wisdom and art,
We gain the wide view, see the ills our lands ail from,
And learn with the team to take part.
Now thirty years later the thread is unbroken;
Chefoo is a name still loved and alive;
God guides us and gives us each day a new token
That His work still continues to thrive.
And from the old stock...”
