“...I NTRZ?T> (ACTION
Singing was always a favorite pastime at Chefoo
Schools, at Chefoo (now Yantai), at the internment
camp at Weihsien (now Weifang) 1942-45, and at
Kuling. It is interesting, however, that students at the
schools in Free China during the War years, at Kiating in
Sichuan, then at Kalimpong in India, have no recollection of
being part of the Chefoo School tradition. Their teachers,
hastily recruited from available missionaries, had no past
experiences as Chefusians, whether as students or teachers.
Most school songs originated at Yantai, but in the post-War
years Stanley Houghton and Gordon Martin teamed up to
add verses pertinent to Kuling, as in the official school song,
Greet we the School, or wrote a few new ones, such as The
Swimming Pool Song, both included here.
Over the years the Chefoo Schools Association produced
several small booklets of school songs, and in many years
past some brief recordings, on audio tape cassettes, were
recorded and were given limited circulation...”

“...the spring of 2010, as my wife Robbie and I were
singing through Golden Bells, I got an idea. Why not
produce a CD of Chefoo favorites? The final result was
that on Friday, July 30, 2010 Joanne (Crapuchettes)
Bartel (soprano and alto), Sandy Grant (soprano), wife of
Kulingite Ian, Don Bartel, Joanne's husband (bass),
myself, and my wife Robbie (accompanist), met at the
piano studio in our home. John Erskine, the recording
specialist at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, recorded
and prepared the CD."
The team of singers has done a superb job, given how little
time they had to practice (3-4 hours), and that they had
never sung together before. But this recording is not meant
to be a stand-alone professional recording to sell on the
open market. Its purpose is to accompany Chefusians who
wish to play it and follow along with the team, alone or in
groups, including at Chefoo reunions. Forthat purpose it
will serve you well.
Alas, we were only able to record a small number of songs.
We selected...”

^R,eer we TH-e school
Chefoo School Song
Words and Music by Stanley Houghton
Greet we the School in whose honour we sing,
Whose fame is our trust and care!
Greatful affection to thee would we bring,
Proof by the deeds we dare.
Storing our minds with the lore of the past,
Secrets of Nature's Art;
Fresh conquest making, we strive to the last
Nobly to play our part.
Chorus:
Underthe glow of the lamp that is lit
On the shores of an Eastern sea;
Daughters and sons, in loyalty knit,
Plight we our troth to Thee

“...boats,
Hear the word from eager throats,
Where the boats are waiting handy,
Carried down by Kan Sampandy,
To the boats, to the boats, to the boats.
Stroke gets the glory, but Three does all the work,
With the backing of Bow and of Two,
And the blame goes to Cox when he steers us on the rocks,
But the victory belongs to all the Crew.
To the Crew, to the Crew,
And not to me or you.
When we're welded well together
By the work in every weather
We're a Crew, we're a Crew, we're a Crew!

H-e WILL HOLL ME FAST
When I fear my faith will fail,
Christ can hold me fast!
When the tempter would prevail,
He can hold me fast!
Refrain: He will hold me fast,
He will hold me fast; For my Saviour loves me so, He will hold me fast!
He'll not let my soul be lost,
Christ will hold me fast;
Bought by Him at such a cost,
He will hold me fast!

A RULER CAME TOJ&SV.S
A ruler once came to Jesus by night,
To ask Him the way of salvation and light;
The Master made answer in words true and plain,
"Ye must be born again!"
Chorus: "Ye must be born again!
Ye must be born again!
I verily, verily say unto thee,
Ye must be born again!"
A dear one in heaven thy heart yearns to see,
At the beautiful gate may be watching for thee;
Then list to the note of this solemn refrain:
"Ye must be born again!"

All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

And a thousand joys unknown before
Seem flooding my heart till it's brimming o'er,
And I go singing.
Chorus: Singing, singing, 1 go singing, Yes, I'm always singing; Christ holds my hand, by faith 1 stand, And as the hours are winging, 1 press along with cheerful song, Singing, singing, singing.
So onward, upward, homeward bound,
I go singing, singing the Gospel to all around,
Sounding it forth till hearts resound;
In heaven at last with the ransom's crowned,
Forever singing.

LORL OF ALL POWER, ANT* MI6}HT
Chefoo School Anthem
Lord of all power and might,
Who art the author and giver of all good things,
Graft in our hearts the love of Thy Name,
Graft in our hearts the love of Thy Name;
Increase in us true religion,
Nourish us with thy goodness,
And of Thy great mercy
Keep us in the same,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
