English might more commonly use the term 'Maroon', from the French adjective 'marron', meaning 'fugitive'. Contemporary (2024) Dutch now uses the spelling 'Marron'. The Maroon were often escaped African slaves. In this book, boschnegers refers to Ndyuka-Trio pidgin speakers. Both the Ndyuka people, also spelled 'Djuka', and the Trio people were Surinamese Maroon. ( English )
