|a The note reads: The original (presumably 1909 on his retirement) paper. Money (77 pieces, [as counted in] 1973) used in Madagascar before the French took the island -- a Spanish florin was cut by special scissors & weighed. My father carried, as was common (among the white population at least) everywhere some of this money with weights & scales & scissors. I was told that he carried it in this afolé [sic, affolé] box, with [a] note inside by my mother. |
