- Description: One note and a Pillbox with cut money inside
- General Note:
- The note reads: The original (presumably 1909 on his retirement) paper. Money (77 pieces, [as counted in] 1973) used in Madagascar before the French took the island -- a Spanish florin was cut by special scissors & weighed. My father carried, as was common (among the white population at least) everywhere some of this money with weights & scales & scissors. I was told that he carried it in this afolé [sic, affolé] box, with [a] note inside by my mother.
- General Note:
- This type of money is often known as 'cut money'. Cut money, during the 18th and 19th centuries, was in circulation throughout the Spanish world, notably in the West Indies and the American continents. Fractions of the Spanish American dollar or florin
served as halves, quarters, eights, and other small currency.
