Notes

Abstract:
Betty Keyes interviewed about her life and her personal memories of Partition. ( en )
General Note:
Biographical history: Betty Keyes was born in 1930 in Tarkisha into an Anglo-Indian family. Her father was born in England and worked for the railway in West Bengal. Her mother was born in India of Portuguese heritage. Keyes was educated at Calcutta Girls High School worked in the telephone exchange, first as an operator and later as a supervisor. She retired in 1985. Whitehead writes: "Betty Keyes, born 1930, was - when I met her - living alone just off Chowringhee Road in Calcutta. I was alerted to her story by an article about her written by Rinku Datta and published in Himal magazine. There are discrepancies between what she told Rinku and recited to me - but the basic story of a young Anglo-Indian woman in Calcutta at Partition, and her account of Anglo-Indian attitudes towards independence, is fairly consistent."
