General Note:
Biographical history: Ashoka Gupta was born in November 1912. She was educated at St. Margaret's School and Bethune College in Calcutta [Kolkata]. She married Saibal Gupta, an Indian Civil Service officer. She became a member of All India Women's Conference (AIWC) in 1936 and was involved in relief work following the Bengal famine of 1943. Her husband was posted to Chittagong in 1945 and she moved with him. Following the Noakhali riots, she led a volunteer team of relief workers from Chittagong AIWC to Noakhali. She is the founder of the West Bengal Emergency Relief Committee in 1947, which was later renamed Mahila Seva Samity (Organisation for the Welfare of Women). Following Partition, she migrated to Calcutta and continued work focused on refugee rehabilitation, literacy, social welfare projects among rural women and children. She was later President of Indian Society for Sponsorship and Adoption. She died on the 8 July 2008.
