1997; in tears at end of interview
238 - civil supplies officer in Jallandhar city in summer of
47; family from Rawalpindi district, 'it was a M
village, there were v few S families there; we had our
land there and they were our tenants'; in village in
June 47; 'we saw that vill comp razed down, cos after
March, villages were razed down; all of our people had
already migrated from there; only a few M families who
were our tenants were there; and all these blldgs were
razed to the ground ...by M riff-raff'; no Ss killed
in the vill
258 - seven generations had stayed in that village
260 - Ms from surr villages took the initiative in the attack;
Ss in vill were all zamindars
266 - posted in Jallandhar from 44; imm before partition, in
July and early Aug, 'people started losing faith in
each other; ... we had been tog for yrs and yrs in
one place, but imm we lost confidence in each other;
we used to see each other with bloodshot others'
276 - 'then people started migrating to refugee camps, Ms,
... they were of course v much insecurity'; story of
M chowkidar killed - then decided to send Ms at work to
Pak
284 - father 'arranged for two or three tucks, we loaded them
[with Ms] and sent them there [to Pak], but something
v unfortunate happened, ... an inspector of mine ... was
murdered by another S, a junior colleague of his'
290 - 'we sent some food to people in the refugee camps who
were our friends ... but they refused to take our food
... becuause it might be poisooned'; M friends, 'we used
to be togther ... for days and nights, all of a sudden
they lost confidence in us'
297 - 'we saw some things happening some ladies, M ladies, being
abducted and then killed, and put into the live fire ...
I saw them with my own eyes ... they were daughters of
some minister ... all those riff-raff [attacking] ...
they were incensed by all this false prop or whatever it
was that their ladies had been raped and this and that
so as a part of revenge, they also did this thing ...
madness'
304 - sugar mill in Jallanhar city, then next door a stock of
firewood; after gun shot, went into sugar mill; 'then I
see a crowd of 3 to 400 people, all drunk, there were two
young girls, those were the daughters of some minister,
... M girls, v young, 20, 21, and they were abducted two
or three days earlier ... while going to their parents,
they were molested, raped whatever, and then they bodily
lifted them, and they threw them in that fire ... we
couldn't sleep for one week after seeing such gruesome
things, and when I asked them, they sd this thing has
happd to our people, why sd we not ... thrown alive
