Abstract:
In this section, S/31, there is the 492 verses poem entitled ‘Utenzi wa Amun bin Kulusa na mkewe Ramia binti Dasi zamani za Mtume Isa bin Maryam Raubi-Ilahi Ta-ala’ written by Suleiman Mohammed Suleiman Mauly who it is not certain to be the actual author. It could be that Suleiman scribed the poem and collected for Whiteley. Here there is a handwritten copy together with the typescript version. The poem is written in Kipemba dialect with the few peculiarities of this dialect such as, for instance, the use of k+ vocals is rendered as ‘kia or kio’ rather than the standard ‘cha or cho’. Unusually for northern poems, this religious poem does not concern the Prophet Mohammed, but instead it narrates of the time of Issa bin Maryam, how Jesus is called among Muslims. The poem tells of a beautiful woman called Ramia binti Dasi whom many man wanted to marry. Amun bin Kulusa also wanted to marry Ramia but Amun’s father opposes the marriage. ( en )
