Abstract:
In this section there are miscellaneous papers from the Whiteley papers. . M/1 contains a list of birds from southern Tanzania as seen by C J Tweedy during the period between July 1963 and July 1964. M/2 contains a report on the visit of Prof. Allott and Mrs Allott (together with Mr Pearson) to the Soviet Union in October 1966, as part of an exchange scheme with the Russian Institute of the peoples of Asia, of the Academy of Sciences. The report gives an outline of the situation of Oriental and African studies in the former Soviet Union, in the 1960s. M/3 contains Information Report no. 13, dated March 1967, of the Encyclopaedia Africana, an Institution part of the Ghana Academy of Sciences. The report assures members that even if the government of Ghana has changed in February 1966, the project for the Encyclopaedia Africana has been continuing as before. M/4 contains a draft for an article by Aidan Southall entitled ‘The Illusion of Tribe’ to be published in the Journal of African and Asian Studies in 1970. In M/5 there is a list of abbreviations of Journals and Publications published in English, French, and German, relevant for African Studies, Anthropology, and Linguistics. Finally, M/6 contains an article by B S Hoyle, of the Geography department of the University of Wales, entitled “East African Seaports: An Application of the Concept of ‘anyport’”. The author discusses the five seaports of Mombasa, Tanga, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and Mtwara, that handle ocean-going vessels. ( en )
