Abstract:
The style of the miniatures in this Shāhnāma is close to that of a group of manuscripts possibly all produced in the same workshop in Kashmir. One of the most striking features of this group is the prevalence of the colour orange. Many of the miniatures are divided into two registers, with two consecutive scenes taking place. This miniature shows Zāl and the Sīmurgh in the lower section. The Sīmurgh is summoned by Zal to help his wife Rūdāba, who is predicted to have a difficult birth. The Sīmurgh suggests a birth by ceasarian section. Rūdāba reclines above, having just given birth to the great hero Rustam (Text by Emily Shovelton, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
