Notes

Abstract:
This manuscript book contains the Sanskrit text of the Kāraṇda-vyūha-sūtra, a discursive work on the cult of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara which promotes the use of the famous mantra Ōṃ maṇi padme hūṃ. Avalokiteśvara is portrayed on the first page in Tibeto-Nepalese style. The text is written in an ornamental Nepalese script, and the pages are stacked between two wooden boards and tied round with braid (Text by Philip Denwood, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
