Notes
- Abstract:
- Published by royal authority in 1797 (and several times re-issued), this book comprises 120 stories of notable examples of the Five Relationships of Confucianism, and thus treats themes such as loyal subjects, filial children, virtuous wives, fraternal duty, faithful friends and so on. The lively illustrations are attributed to Kim Hongdo, a noted eighteenth-century Korean painter. While most of the stories are based on Chinese legends, some are entirely Korean in origin. For instance, this image relates the story of a pious Korean man named Kim Cha-gang who wished to mourn his mother for three years. The text is written partly in Chinese characters and partly in hangeul. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
