Before the widespread introduction of paper across South Asia in the twelfth century, manuscripts were often produced on multiple strips of palm-leaf with wooden covers, all attached with a long cord. Few survive from southern India before the sixteenth century, due to their fragile nature. The inscribed Malayalam passages on the fifty leaves of this bound manuscript are sections from the story of Rāma, the Rāmāyaṇa, known across South and South East Asia in various regional versions, as identified by L.D. Barnett (1871-1960) of the British Museum and Professor of Sanskrit at the University of London. In Kerala, the story is known in a variety of genres besides the written version, including performance as shadow-puppet theatre (Text by Crispin Branfoot, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
