“...that France and Great Britain would, in war time, largely leave Syria and Palestine respectively to the care of the Turks, to hand them over, when the war was won, to the pre-War masters of the mandated territories. That, doubtless, is an exaggeratedly gloomy conclusion, but the malcontents in Syria and Palestine have certainly a lively apprehension of the part that Turkey could play in their midst.
Nor would the example of Turkey be lost on the rest of Western Asia, a considerable part of which (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan) is already bound to her through the Saadabad Pact. Alike in Europe and in Asia, then, Turkey is to be regarded as a solidifying influence of the highest value.
Turkey and Egypt
And what of Africa? The cordiality now existing between Ankara and Cairo is a matter of moment, and its import has not been lost on the Axis. Those who

A recent manifesto issued by ex-rebel leaders now in Damascus, and quoted by The Times and other papers, described Abu Durra as follows: “ Abu Durra used to hawk about mineral water on a barrow which he drove through the streets of Haifa, as everyone knows. He is now leading with us, in Damascus, a life of kings in luxury and comfort.”
A Would-be Rebel Leader
The latest aspirant for “ commanding ” honours is Abdul Kader al Husseini, a nephew of the Mufti of Jerusalem. Abdul Kader, a former Government official, left his employ three years ago to join Fawzi Kawkagi in the autumn rebellion of 1936, and was captured by British troops south of Bethlehem that year during an engagement in which Said el A’as, a gang-leader and gunrunner, was killed. Abdul Kader was remanded on bail for being in possession of ammunition, but he “ skipped ” his bail and fled to Syria and Iraq, from which he...”
