- Abstract:
- Joumana Merhy was born on 1 May, 1965, in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1975, Joumana fled Beirut into the mountains with her family to escape civil war. Her father was a small business owner of a cafe and her mother was a craftswoman at an association. At the age of 17 she left her family home to fight against the Israeli invasion. She went on to complete her Bachelors degree at the Lebanese University, majoring in business management and accounting, as well as sociology. During the war in Lebanon, Joumana volunteered with the nursing department for the Civil Defence team of Lebanon, working with the relief teams in Sabra and Shatila. From 1982 to 2003 Joumana was involved with leftist parties in Lebanon as a member. Her experience in politics drove her to become an active proponent of women's rights due to the marginalization and sexist discrimination she faced within the party. During this time she also worked with other women's organizations from 1984-1990, supporting illiterate women and marginalized communities, organizing demonstrations for higher wages, and greater protection of women within labour unions. Joumana also worked as an accountant for a number of years before she became a trainer in human rights at her current employment with the Arab Institute for Human Rights where she does training on women's rights as human rights. At the time of the interview, she continued to be involved with the Lebanese Democratic Women Gathering. ( en )
