- Abstract:
- Adma was born in Karak in 1967. Her parents were farmers from the Zuriekat tribe. She studied mathematics at the University of Jordan and went on to become a teacher. Adma became interested in politics whilst at university, which led to her first encounter with the intelligence services and the loss of her scholarship. She was active around the Palestinian issue during the First Intifada and also supported the 1989 uprising against austerity measures, which paved the way for the return to democracy in 1989. She joined the Democratic Popular Unity Party when it formed in 1990. From 2010, she was very active in the strikes and protests for better pay and conditions for teachers, including calls to create a teachers’ association. She was the only woman elected to negotiate with the government on behalf of the teachers. They succeeded in pressuring the government to create a teachers’ association and Adma ran in the elections for the association’s executive but was not successful. As a result of her activities, Adma was subject to harassment from the authorities. ( en )
