- Abstract:
- Hayat was born in 1962, in the Balatah refugee camp, Nablus, in the West Bank. Her parents fled from their home in Yaffa in the 1948 war and they were once again uprooted as a result of the 1967 war, moving to live in Zarqa, Jordan. Hayat studied pharmacy at Jordan University, graduating in 1986. At university she was involved in student activities through the Islamic movement and Muslim Brotherhood. After the return to democracy in 1989, Hayat was one of the founders of the Islamic Action Front, heading up the women's section, and was elected to the Shura Council for four terms (around 16 years) She stood in parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007. She won in 2003 and was a member of the Jordanian parliament from 2003-2007 with the Islamic Movement bloc. Hayat believes that being elected to parliament as a woman and as a woman wearing the hijab is very important in order to signal to society that women are capable of holding decision-making positions. She also believes that Jordanian women have gained many rights on paper but they are not being properly implemented and this should be the focus of efforts to improve women’s situation. Like her party, she is opposed to CEDAW, which she considers to be inappropriate to the Jordanian context. ( en )
