Abstract:
Abla was born in Qalqiliyah, on the Palestinian West Bank, and moved to Amman after the 1967 war. At the time of the interview, she was tge secretary general of the Jordanian People’s Democratic Party (HASHD), a Jordanian leftist party that emerged from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) after 1971. She began her political involvement with the General Union of Palestinian Women, before joining the DFLP. In the past, she was harassed by the authorities because of her involvement with the DFLP. She was elected to the Jordanian parliament (2010-2013), where she sat on the Labour Committee and was head of the Public Liberties Committee. Abla has also been involved in civil society organizations: she was a co-founder of the Jordanian Women’s Union in 1974 and a member of the Jordanian Writers' Society. She became even more involved in women's rights organisations after attending the Beijing UN Women’s conference (in 1995) Abla has witnessed splits in women's organisations, believing that too many of them focus on funding rather than action. In relation to the outcomes of the Arab uprisings, she believes that the best way of achieving revolutionary goals is through democracy and is opposed to autocracy and to fundamentalism. ( en )
